Well Worth The Wait

June 23 vs. Atlanta Braves

Immunity:
Mark Buehrle
Exiled:
Gordon Beckham

Buehrle didn't have his best stuff, but he found a way to get through six with a lead. Poor Bacon. He's the only one not contributing right now.

Short Take: After a rain delay of nearly two hours, Carlos Quentin belts two home runs and Mark Buehrle turns in a gutsy performance as the Sox win their eighth straight game.

Not even tornado warnings and Armageddon-like thunderstorms can stop this White Sox winning streak. Believe it or not, the South Siders are charging their way right back into the American League Central Division race. They collected their eighth straight victory Wednesday night, beating the Atlanta Braves 4-2 in a game that didn't start until after 9 p.m. due to severe weather in the Chicago area.

Once the game began, White Sox right fielder Carlos Quentin brought plenty of thunder and lightning. His two-run blast to the opposite field highlighted a three-run rally in the fourth inning that gave the Sox all the runs they would need. For good measure, Quentin came up in the seventh inning and ripped another homer over the bullpen in left off Atlanta starter Tim Hudson (7-3) to give the Sox the final margin of victory.

Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle (6-6) wasn't at his best. He allowed nine hits over six innings, but he pitched out of three huge jams. The Braves placed runners on first and third with no outs in the second inning. They only scored one. Atlanta had runners at second and third with one out in the fifth. Again, only one run scored. The Braves loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. They got nada. Credit Buehrle for making the big pitches when necessary.

The Sox bullpen was outstanding in this contest. J.J Putz worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Matt Thornton fired a scoreless eighth. Bobby Jenks needed only four pitches to retire the side in the ninth and earn his 16th save in 17 attempts. (Take that, Jenks haters!)

The out-of-town scoreboard brought more good news for the Sox and their fans. Both the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers lost. Thus, the Sox are now only 3 1/2 games back in the division race. They'll try to sweep the Braves Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. Gavin Floyd (2-7, 5.20 ERA) will be on the mound for the South Siders. Veteran right-hander Derek Lowe (9-5, 4.77 ERA) is slated to pitch for Atlanta. If you're not working, you can watch the game on WGN.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
I really can't believe this turnaround. Honestly, I didn't think the Sox had a winning streak like this in them.
