Sweep Slidin' Away!

June 20 at Washington Nationals

Immunity:
Dayan Viciedo
Exiled:
Nobody

Dayan Viciedo acquitted himself well in his first ML start. And the rest of these guys looked pretty damn good as well!

Short Take: Back to .500 at long last!

The final game of this interleague series saw Sweaty Freddy Garcia facing John Lannon. The Sox jumped on top in the first inning and didn’t look back—well, except for a short time in the bottom of the fourth. But I digress…. Final Score: Sox 6, Nats 3.

First inning: with two out, Alex Rios singled and stole second. Paulie Konerko followed up with a single that scored Rios. The Nats went down in order, then the Sox mounted a mini-threat in the top of two, but failed to score. Nothing much happened after that until the bottom of four, when the Nats scored three runs to –briefly—take the lead. After four, Nats 3, Sox 1.

Ah, but wait! In the top of the fifth, small ball came into play, when Juan Pierre singled to right, Alexei Ramirez singled to center, sending the speedy Pierre to third. Alex Rios doubled, scoring Pierre, then a single by Paul Konerko scored both Alexei and Rios. Still no outs, but the Nats brought in Miguel Batista to replace Lannan. Carlos Quentin singled to right, sending Konerko to second, then Ramon Castro singled to load the bases. Unfortunately, Dayan Viciedo, who had hit the ball hard in his first ML appearance, grounded into a double play. Although this scored Konerko, it effectively ended the chance for a really big inning. Gordon Beckham came up and grounded to the shortstop. However, the Sox had regained the lead. Freddy got the Nats to go down in order in the bottom of the frame, and the Sox led 5-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Sox made a couple of key defensive moves, bringing in Matt Thornton in relief of Garcia and Omar Vizquel to take over third. The Sox added an insurance run in the top of the ninth and the game ended Sox 6, Nats 3.

Unfortunately, Philadelphia once again let the Twins beat them, so the Sox fail to gain any ground against them. But at least the Sox are back to .500. After an offday tomorrow, the Sox begin a three game series at home against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Game time: 7:10 central.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
I now completely understand why Philadelphia fans boo their teams!
