Bring Out the Brooms

June 17 at Pittsburgh

Immunity:
Mark Buehrle
Exiled:
Sergio Santos

Buehrle was wonderful again, striking out six and only allowing two earned runs in 7.1 innings pitched. His bat could use a little work though. (Just kidding.) Sergio, really. Early season Bobby Jenks is not who we want to pitch like. Stop now.

Short Take:   Buehrle provides another quality start as Sox sweep Bucs in Pittsburgh

Interleague play is still being kind to the White Sox, as they beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4, completing the sweep. Mark Buehrle, starting in place of Jake Peavy, picked up his fifth win of the season, and the Pirates lost their eleventh game in a row.

Buehrle pitched a solid 7.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out six. The first Pirates run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Neil Walker. In the eighth inning, Buehrle struck out Bobby Crosby before allowing a double to Andy LaRoche. Ozzie pulled him in favor of Sergio Santos who didn't look as sharp as usual. Santos walked Jose Tabata and gave up a single to Walker to load the bases. LaRoche scored on an Andrew McCutchen single, and Santos's latest "early season Bobby Jenks" impression ended, as Matt Thornton came on. Garrett Jones hit a sacrifice fly to score Tabata, Lastings Milledge singled to score Walker, but Thornton got Pedro Alvarez to strike out swinging, ending the inning and the damage. Jenks came on for his 13th save, which was assisted by a great diving catch by Juan Pierre.

The offense was still alive and kicking against the National League. In the second inning, Carlos Quentin led off with a double. Alexei Ramirez singled to right, moving Quentin to third, and Gordon Beckham drove him in on a sac fly to center. More runs scored in the third inning, as Pierre singled to right and Omar Vizquel was hit by a pitch. After Alex Rios grounded out, Paul Konerko drove Pierre home on a sac fly. Quentin picked up another double, scoring Vizquel, but AJ Pierzynski left him stranded at second to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, the Sox scored their final two runs. Beckham led off the inning with a ground rule double. Buehrle moved him to third on a sac bunt, and Pierre brought him home on a triple to center. Vizquel singled to center, scoring Pierre but was left on base as Rios struck out and Konerko grounded out.

The Sox head farther east to Washington for a series against the Nationals. Gavin Floyd matches up against ESPN's new favorite pitcher, Stephen Strasburg. Floyd looks for his third win of the season (really? He's only won two? Where have I been?) while the Sox look to hand Strasburg his first loss. Catch the game on Comcast SportsNet or the MLB Network at 6:05pm.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
Every time the Sox play in a National League park, I have to laugh when the pitchers come to bat. It's always good for a giggle. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing Dayan Viciedo now that the Sox have DFA'd Jayson Nix. Thanks for...I have no idea what exactly...Jayson, and good luck wherever you end up.
