WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

One Man Gang

April 30 at New York (AL)

Immunity:
Freddy
Exiled:
Juan Pierre

Freddy pitched well after a shaky first inning by retiring 12 batters in a row. Pierre continues to be an American League bust, moved to the #9 spot in the order and not hitting his weight

Short Take: † Derek Jeter shines for the Bronx Bombers as he drives in four runs late in the game to give the World Champions a victory over our Sox.

Derek Jeter is one of the best in the business with runners in scoring position, and Friday night was no exception. With a capacity crowd on hand, Jeter single-handedly took over the Yankees offense to lead them to a 6-4 win over the South Siders in a game the Sox could have, and perhaps should have, won.

Paul Konerko gave the Good Guys an early lead with a 3-run homer in the top of the first after bloop hits by Alexei Ramirez (leading off instead of struggling Juan Pierre) and Gordon Beckham. It was Konerkoís third homer in three consecutive at bats, and his 11th homer on the season. The blast gives Paulie the all-time April record for homers by a Sox player, breaking a tie with Jim Thome. It is also the first time in MLB history that a Sox player has been the first to reach 11 homers in a season.

Unfortunately, Freddy Garcia struggled after sitting through the long top of the 1st inning. Garcia was wild to start the game and let the Yankees quickly score two runs back on consecutive hits by A-Rod and Robinson Cano. After that, Freddy settled down and actually retired 12 straight batters at one point.

The Sox tagged on an extra run in the top of the 2nd when hot-hitting Donny Lucy doubled and eventually scored on a sac fly by Beckham. As has been the case too often lately, Andy Pettitte and the rest of the Yankees staff would limit the Sox to only two hits for the rest of the game.

With a 4-2 lead going into the 5th inning, Derek Jeter took over. After Brett Gardner reached on a duck snort, Jeter smoked a two-run homer into the leftfield seats to tie the game. In the bottom of the 7th, with Gardner and Francisco Cervelli on base, Jeter went with Thorntonís outside pitch, driving it into the right field corner for a triple, clearing the bases and giving the Bombers a 6-4 lead. Thatís all Mariano Rivera needed for the 9th inning to notch his 7th save.

Derek Jeter is still the man. Hopefully the Sox can come back and win the next two against headcase Javy Vazquez and Phil Hughes.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
†The Sox will attempt to take the next two from the World Champs and salvage the series and go .500 on the road trip (tough task, indeed). Danks is on the hill on Saturday, so hopefully the Sox can win.
