Split is Better Than Swept

April 15 at Toronto

Immunity:
Alexei Ramirez
Exiled:
Freddy Garcia

Ramirez hit a two-run home run in the seventh, making the loss a little closer. Freddy lasted three innings and gave up all seven Blue Jays runs.

Short Take:   Freddy Garcia exits early as the Sox split in Toronto

Considering the Sox hadn't won a game in Toronto since 2007, a split with the Blue Jays isn't bad.

Freddy Garcia picked up the loss tonight, as the Sox fell to the Jays 7-3 in Toronto. Garcia lasted only three innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and three walks. Garcia's downfall started in the second inning when he gave up a solo home run to Travis Snider that was a no-doubter into deep right field. However, it was the third and fourth innings that proved to be the difficult ones. Garcia gave up four straight hits in the third, two of which scored runs, before Lyle Overbay struck out for the first out of the inning.

After allowing three runs to score in the third, Garcia came back out in the fourth. He faced the first three batters and did not record an out before Ozzie pulled him for Randy Williams, who proceeded to give up a double to Alex Gonzalez, which put the Blue Jays up 7-0.

Donny Lucy provided a little bit of life in the fifth inning when he hit his first Major League home run to get the Sox on the board. The sixth inning looked promising. Juan Pierre led off the inning with a walk, and Gordon Beckham singled to left. However, Carlos Quentin flied into a double play, as Juan Pierre was doubled off second on a throw from Vernon Wells. The Sox would end the inning without scoring a run. The final two Sox runs would come in the seventh inning. Andruw Jones led off the inning with a walk, and Alexei Ramirez hit his first home run of the season two batters later.

The bullpen, for the most part, kept the Blue Jays lead from getting out of hand. Sergio Santos came on in the sixth inning and continued with his stellar pitching, striking out all three batters he faced in the sixth. JJ Putz allowed a single to Jeremy Reed but struck out the other three batters he faced in the seventh inning. Scott Linebrink continued to look good as well, allowing a single to Alex Gonzalez and striking out the other three batters he faced in the eighth.

Despite falling to 4-6 on the season, the Sox seemed to start waking up this series. We'll see what happens when the Sox travel to Cleveland. Mark Buehrle takes on Mitch Talbot at Progressive Field at 6:05pm tomorrow on WCIU.

WSI's
TBGR Diary:
Prior to this game, Freddy had a lifetime ERA in Toronto of almost six. I wasn't expecting much from him, but I expected a bit better than this. Major props to Donny Lucy for hitting his first career home run.
