Simply Outclassed

(October 2)

Short take:  Sure, the Yanks are better.

As the Sox front office contemplates what is necessary to make the team champions, let's hope they are wise enough to reflect on the events of this game as the yardstick for precisely how far the Sox need to go before they can expect to beat the New York Yankees.  The Sox fought hard but were ultimately outclassed by a superior team, 6-4 losers in the Bronx.

The Sox started 2002 rotation-hopeful Dan Wright.  He did nothing but hurt his chances with five earned runs, two dingers, and three walks, all compressed into a tidy four inning mess.  Both round-trippers were crushed beyond Yankee Stadium's enormous left field power alley, 400 foot shots aimed at the monuments to Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and several other dead Yankees who must be laughing at the meatballs served by Wright tonight.

Meanwhile the Yankees countered with Cy Young candidate Ted Lilly.  He's not a Cy Young candidate?  Well he might as well be to our Sox hitters, who once again proved they have no clue--or patience--with a guy who's stuff they've never seen before.  Lilly pitched six innings of six-hit ball.  That doesn't sound like much but his ERA is 5.70.  The Sox managed to get leads off this guy in the first, third, and fifth innings.  But these are the world champions and none of those leads survived the next half-inning.

Once Lilly was dismissed, the Yankee bullpen went to work. For middle relief, Joe Torre didn't even bother with the heavy artillery.  Slugs Jay Witasick and Mark Wohlers each pitched scoreless innings.  They made the Yankees 5-4 lead hold up.  Imagine if Torre had used the good guys, for cryin' out loud!

Kudos to Josh Fogg for keeping it close.  He pitched two scoreless innings but a leadoff double in the eighth lead inevitably to the insurance run that you knew would break whatever spirit still lurked inside the Sox dugout.  Sure enough the Sox went down 1-2-3 to Mariano Rivera in the ninth--all strikeouts.  Now that's heavy artillery!  Funny.  Unlike our closer, he didn't seem uncomfortable at all out there.

Are the Sox just a few healed injuries away from competing with these guys?  Maybe.  But it sure didn't look like it tonight.

Sox try to avoid the sweep Wednesday night.
