Buehrle Sharp, but One Mistake- and His Offense- Cost Him

September 13 at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

KW's Daily Special:
Underdone Chicken
Another Sunday, another loss for those of the Burger Joint.

Short Take:   Mark Buehrle had a great outing, only giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits in seven innings, but the offense went back to sleep after the first, squandering a handful of scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the game.

After beating the Angels in ten innings yesterday afternoon in front of a national audience, the Sox went into this afternoon's contest looking not only to take the series in SoCal, but for only their eighth win on Sundays this season! Unfortunately, as the season has gone, they came up short, dropping the rubber match in Anaheim 3-2.

The Sox got to Scott Kazmir right away in the first inning when he didn't have command of his pitches. Scott Podsednik popped out to third to lead off the game and with one out, Gordon Beckham doubled to deep right. Paul Konerko followed with a walk, then Jermaine Dye flew out. With two outs, the Sox capitalized on Kazmir's shakiness, courtesy of Carlos Quentin. TCQ's base hit to left scored both Beckham and Konerko, giving the White Sox an early 2-0 lead.

Mark Buehrle went out to pitch the home half of the first and gave up a run, which isn't entirely uncommon for him. Maicer Izturis led off the inning with a double to left and went to third with one out on a rare throwing error by Buehrle. Bobby Abreu's sacrifice fly to center scored Izturis, slicing the Sox's lead in half, 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the third when the Angels tied this one up. Howie Kendrick led off the inning with a double and scored two batters later when Maicer Izturis singled to left center.

The game remained tied at two until the bottom of the seventh when the hated Torii Hunter hit his 21st homerun of the season, which ended up being the difference in the ballgame. Once Buehrle surrendered the solo shot, he settled right back in, retiring the side in order, but the damage had been done.

Even though the Sox didn't score in any inning after the first, they managed to get the tying run on base in the ninth. A.J. Pierzynski, hated by Angels' fans everywhere for the infamous dropped third strike four years ago, batted for Ramon Castro and singled to center. That's where he stayed, though, as Scott Podsednik popped out to third and Gordon Beckham flew out to Abreu in right, ending the game.

With Detroit winning and the Sox falling in SoCal, the south siders find themselves back to two games under .500 and six games behind the Tigers with just three weeks to go. With tomorrow being an off day, the Sox don't play again until late on Tuesday night in Seattle. The Sweaty One, Freddy Garcia, (1-2, 4.40) will take the mound for the Sox in the Emerald City, and he'll oppose the Mariners' Ian Snell (6-10, 5.28). The first pitch will be thrown at 9:10p CDT and the game will be broadcast on WGN.

WSI's
Critic's Corner:
Two stars for the runs they managed off a shaky Kazmir in the first.
