White Sox Spank Boston, 12-2

September 4 vs. Red Sox

KW's Daily Special:
Deep Fried Turkey
A well-done Byrd, no doubt

Short Take:  Ozzie Guillen captures his 500th victory as the White Sox manager as the bats come alive on Friday night.

The White Sox won their third straight game on Friday, doing so in impression fashion. The offense exploded for 12 runs off Boston pitching, while Freddy Garcia logged another solid performance as the 5th starter. With Detroit’s victory and a Twins’ loss, the Sox stand 7.0 games back, but only 1.0 out of a tie for second place.

Boston starter Paul Byrd did not have as much luck against the Sox on Friday night as he had in Game 1 of the 2005 ALCS. The Sox jumped on Byrd early, as Mark Kotsay hit a two-run bomb to right field in the 2nd inning to give the Good Guys a quick 2-0 lead. The flood gates opened in the 3rd, however, when the Sox put a five-spot on the board, all without the benefit of a home run.

Gordon Beckham lead off with a triple and came home on a single off the bat of AJ (3-0 Sox). Pierzynski moved to third on a double by Pauly and then scored on a single to centerfield by Kotsay (4-0 Sox). With runners on the corners, hot-hitting Chris Getz doubled down the RF line to score PK and move Kotsay to third (5-0 Sox). Finally, the Cuban Missile ripped a single up the middle to score Kotsay and Getz (7-0 Sox), finally ending the evening of Mr. Byrd (2.1 IP, 10 Hits, 7 ER. Ouch).

Freddy Garcia ran into a small bump in the road in the top of the 4th by giving up three straight singles to Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez and Kevin Youkilis. The Red Sox would only manage to score one run, though, as Big Game Freddy pitched out of the jam. Meanwhile, the Sox put another five-spot on the board in the bottom half of the inning off Boston reliever Junichi Tazawa. The Sox quickly loaded the bases on an AJ double, a walk to PK, and a single by Kotsay. A sac fly by TCQ brought Pierzynski home (8-1 Sox) before four straight singles by Getz, Alexei, Alex Rios and Scotty Pods drove in another four runs to give the Sox a 12-1 lead.

Boston would pick up a garbage time run in the 9th, but the game was far out of reach by then. Sox pitching kept the Red Sox off the bases, while the big lead gave Ozzie a chance to get some of the youngsters in the game. Lillibridge spelled Alexei at shortstop, Fields pinch hit for TCQ as DH, Tyler Flowers got some time behind the plate, and Dan Hudson made an impressive major league pitching debut in two innings of relief. Even Jhonny Nunez received an inning of mop-up work (Nick Swisher who?).

Credit Freddy Garcia (1-2) with his first White Sox victory since late 2006 (and only his third MLB victory since then), and Paul Byrd (1-1) gets the loss. The Sox try to continue their three game winning streak today against the Carmines at the Cell. It will be Gavin Floyd taking the hill against knuckleball Tim Wakefield at 3:05 pm. Go Sox!
