WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Glad to Leave this Dump

August 27, at Boston

KW's Daily Special:
Fenway Franks
No better time to celebrate Boston than when you're getting the hell out of it.

Short Take: HOLY CRAP!  Sox jump on no-name Red Sox starter for 9-5 win.

The only American League team that's been tougher on our Sox this past decade than the Red Sox has been the well-documented Oakland A's.  So after dropping three winnable games to start this Road Trip from Hell at the Fens, Sox fans were not sad to say good-bye to Boston's "Shrine," even if it means dates in New York and Minnesota.  John Danks gave the Sox a strong start and the offense piled the runs on some guy named Junichi Tazawa for a 9-5 win to salvage the finale of this crappy, crappy series.

After a quiet first inning, the Sox offense kicked into overdrive.  A pair of singles and some chin music to Carlos Quentin loaded the bases and they didn't disappoint, as has been the case so often the first three games.  Mark Kotsay put the first run on the board with a sac fly, and though Alexei Ramirez flew out to nearly end this threat prematurely, Jayson Nix and Scott Podsednik came through in big ways with a 2 RBI double and RBI single respectively to drop a crooked number on the scoreboard.  The Sox matched that total in the 3rd, highlighted by a Carlos Quentin home run over the Monster to atone for that HBP an inning earlier.  Hey, the Sox built a lead so big, even their bullpen couldn't blow it!

Oh, but they tried.  Danks was solid, but not spectacular, and though he only allowed a pair of runs over six innings, he needed 108 pitches o get through it all and opened the door for the shaky White Sox bullpen to unveil the ultimate gut punch in a season where they seem so never ending.  Octavio Dotel was shaky for his 2nd straight outing, After retiring 5 of the first 6 batters he saw, he walked Kevin Youkilis with 2 outs in the 8th and back-to-back doubles by David Ortiz and Jason Bay drew the Carmines within 5.  Randy Williams, however, continued to be the Surprise of the Season, inducing an easy groundout from Casey Kotchman to snuff the mini-rally.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, got 2 innings of scoreless relief from shortstop Nick Green, and when Bobby Jenks gave up a lead-off home run to Drew in the 9th to the absolute deepest part of Fenway's expansive center field, every Sox fan surely had to be checking to see when was the last time a position player won a game.  Fear not, friends, Jenks retired the next three he saw so the Sox can depart the Bay City for the Big Apple with some dignity, despite the week's disappointing results.

Meanwhile, both Detroit and Minnesota sat idle Thursday, so the Sox are back in 2nd by themselves, 4 games behind the Tigers and at .500 once again.  It doesn't get any easier, though, as our Pale Hose head to the Bronx for their first series in the new Yankee Stadium and Mark Buehrle resumes his search for that elusive 1st victory since twirling a perfecto over a month ago.  He will be faced by a familiar foe, C.C. Sabathia.  Game time is 6:05 PM Central time and the game will be aired on Comcast Sports Net.

WSI's Critic's Corner:  4 stars; got to be happy about the win, which was never really in doubt, no matter how nervous you may have been while watching.
