Not Pretty, But We'll Take It

June 20th vs. the Cincinnati Reds

KW's Daily Special:
Bring Extra Napkins
The White Sox make a mess in Cincinnati with 4 errors, but pull out a 10-8 win.

Short Take:Sloppy, gooey mess, but the Sox pull it out over the Reds 10-8.

Kenny's Burger Joint doubled as a butcher shop tonight in Cincinnati as the White Sox played interleague ball against the Reds. Butchered plays, butchered throws, and a lot of protein in the bats as home runs came from unlikely hitters. A shame it was so ragged since it was the commemorative Civil Rights Game, celebrating the quality play and character of African Americans.

The sloppy hash was slung by the Sox in the Cincinnati 1st. Sox starter Clayton Richard gave up a single and a walk and the Reds got ambitious, pulling a double steal. That was bad enough, but A.J. Pierzynski's throw to third went through the ventilated glove of phenom Gordon Beckham. That allowed the fleet-footed Willy Taveras and Brandon Phillips to score, making it 2-0 Reds.

Another mess in the kitchen in the 3rd as Clayton Richard made a wild throw past first on a bunt by Willy Taveras, and the ball-juggling by Dewayne Wise in right field allowed Taveras to make it to third base. Jerry Hairston got Taveras home on a sacrifice fly. Brandon Phillips followed with a single, which was then followed by a 2-run homer by Jonny Gomes. 5-0 Reds, on a series of gifts by the White Sox defensive clown act.

Then the wind switched as the White Sox came to bat in the 4th. Brian Anderson and Chris Getz both singled, and golden child Gordon Beckham followed with his first MLB home run. 5-3 Reds, and here come the Sox. In the Sox fifth, Scott Podsednik led off with a solo homer. Yes, that's correct, I said Scott Podsednik. Alexei Ramirez singled but was caught leaning as he was picked off -- more sloppiness. But then A.J. Pierzynski golfed a sinker into the right-field seats for a solo homer of his own, tying the game at 5.

In the 6th the White Sox continued to display their new-found hitting prowess. Dewayne Wise, who earlier seemed to think the bat was a curious object, hit a double to center. Scott Podsednik later walked, and Alexei Ramirez released one his wild swings for a 3-run homer. 8-5 Sox in the sixth.

But then in the Cincinnati 7th the White Sox' porous defense let the Reds score 2 more runs on a walk and 3 singles along with some messy throws and glove-handling. Matt Thornton mercifully replaced Octavio Dotel and was able to finish the inning before the Reds could tie the game. 8-7 Sox after 7 innings, but the Sox weren't done. In the 8th, wonderboy Gordon Beckham led off with a walk. Dewayne Wise laid down a sac bunt which Reds pitcher Arthur Rhodes bobbled, allowing Wise to make it to first. Scott Podsednik hit another of his clutch hits, scoring young stud Beckham from second. Then Alexei Ramirez doubled down the third-base line, scoring Wise. 10-7 Sox in the 8th.

Last call in Kenny's Joint, and head bouncer Bobby Jenks came in to clear the floor. After two strikeouts on nasty curveballs, Jay Bruce went after the first pitch and launched it in the right-field seats. After giving up a single, Jenks came back with another drop-curve strikeout to close the game with a 10-8 win for the White Sox.

It'll be overtime in Kenny's kitchen tonight as the mops come out to clean up the mess. But a win is a win, even if you don't want to see it again.

WSI's
Critic's Corner:
Jeez, what a mess! But a win is a win, and that's what matters.
