Betemit Blows Again

June 2nd vs. Oakland Athletics

KW's Daily Special:
A collection of United Airlines barf bags
What the hell was that???

Short Take:Wilson Betemit's fielding error in a tight game helped open the flood gates, putting tonight's game out of reach for the Good Guys.

It seems like so long ago since the Sox have had consistent success facing pitchers they have never seen before. They tend to get the "deer in headlights" look more than if facing a Cy Young candidate. After beating that hex last night, the hex was right back on tonight, as Vin Mazzaro won his major league debut against our Sox. Not only did our guys drop the game--they were shut out 5-0!

Like last night, the A's got on the board immediately. Our SS cast-off Orlando Cabrera led off with a two-bagger, was sacrificed to third by Adam Kennedy, and headed home on a sac fly by Jack Cust, giving the A's a quick 1-0 lead. Would our Palehose respond like they did last night?

The straw that stirs our offense's drink (Scott Podsednik) singled to start things off and used his wheels to easily swipe 2nd. Unfortunately, Mazzaro whirled around and picked him off just before he could get back to the base, which ultimately provided foreshadowing for the rest of the game--our Sox just couldn't get things done any time they were up to bat.

The next couple of frames, Sox hurler Bartolo Colon retired the A's in order; however, Oakland added a run in the 4th on a solo shot by Cust and put a crooked number up the next frame on a bases-clearing double by Matt Holliday, which scored Cust, Jack Hannahan, and Aaron Cunningham. It is very likely that none of those three runs would have scored had it not been for the weak defense of Wilson Betemit, who was subbing for Josh Fields tonight. Betemit can't even field a routine grounder, so it's a wonder why Ozzie still decides to play him at all. Sox fans everywhere are wishing Juan Uribe could return to the South Side to exhorcise the team of the Betemit experiment.

Now that tonight's game is in the books, it is time to look ahead to the next outing. For the third consecutive night, our Sox will face a pitcher they have not seen before--Josh Outman. Hopefully he isn't able to record very many outs. Clayton Richard will hopefully have another solid performance and lead our guys to victory. We'll see what happens just 20.5 hours from now. Same time, same place, different channel (WCIU). Go Sox!
