Sox Kick Some Pirate’s Booty

May 22 vs. Texas

KW's Daily Special:
Boiled Goose-eggs
Nine of them to a plate...one for each inning of scoreless Sox pitching tonight

Short Take:  Gavin Floyd returns to his dominant 2008 form; The Cuban Missile Goes Deep

The Sox missed out on Jake Peavy yesterday, but after Friday night‘s 2-0 defeat of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Cell, they may have gained another solid starter instead…the 2008 version of Gavin Floyd. Unlike the 20-1 drubbing that occurred on Thursday against the Twinkees, Friday’s affair was a low-scoring two-run victory in all of one hour and 47 minutes.

Floyd pitched eight magnificent innings of two-hit shutout baseball, yielding only two free passes and eight strikeouts to gain the victory and run his record to 3-4 on the season. Bobby Jenks came on to pitch a scoreless 9th to notch his tenth save of the season. The Pirates only two hits came from catcher Jason Jaramillo and right fielder Brandon Moss.

The White Sox got on the board in the 3rd inning. The Cuban Missile reached base on a hit and then stole second (although replays showed that he may have actually been out). After a walk to BA, Josh Fields laid down an excellent sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Scott Podsednik grounded out to the right-side of the infield next, but that was enough to score Alexei and give the Sox a 1-0 lead off Pirate starter Zach Duke. In the bottom of the 8th, Alexei added a little insurance off Duke with a solo homer into the leftfield stands.

The Sox have now won three of their last four and hope to continue their mini-hot streak with a win tomorrow, which would clinch their second straight series win. Baby steps! Tomorrow’s game will start at 6:05 with Clayton Richard, coming off a nice start earlier in the week at Toronto, facing Ross Ohlendorf. Go Sox!
