This Just In: The Sox Can't Hit

May 13 at Cleveland Indians

KW's Daily Special:
A steaming pile of crap
We'd recommend you eat somewhere else today

Short Take: The Sox are shut out for the sixth time in just 33 games this season, and Mark Buehrle suffers his first loss of the year.

When Victor Martinez hit a solo home run off Mark Buehrle in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday, my first thought was, "This game is over." I had absolutely zero confidence the Sox would be able to manage even one run against Cleveland ace Cliff Lee. Sadly, my intuition was proven correct as the South Siders were shut out for the sixth time this season. The last-place Tribe came away with a 4-0 win and took two out of three in the series against our slumping Sox.

Buehrle (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season. He put the Sox in 4-0 hole by giving up the aforementioned run in the first, plus two in the fourth and one in the fifth. However, it's hard to blame Buehrle for the loss given that he would not have won this game even if he had tossed nine innings of perfect ball.

Once again, the Sox hitters generated few scoring opportunities - and they did nothing with the minimal chances they had. Lee struck out nine and walked just one in seven shutout innings, but the Sox had him on the ropes twice. The South Siders loaded the bases with two outs in both the sixth and seventh innings. The scoring chance in the sixth went by the wayside when Jermaine Dye struck out looking on a fastball over the inside corner. Dye disagreed with the call, tossed his helmet and got ejected when the helmet bounced up and struck the home-plate umpire. Real smart move there, JD. Now you'll probably get suspended.

The Sox once again got the tying run to the plate in the seventh. Manager Ozzie Guillen summoned Carlos Quentin to pinch-hit for Brent Lillibridge with the bases loaded and two outs, but Quentin popped weakly to center to end the threat and erase all rational hope for a White Sox rally.

The Sox limp into tomorrow's off day, which they will spend in Toronto preceding a four-game set with the first-place Blue Jays. All Sox fans should be looking forward to this weekend series, especially given that the South Siders are 1-8 in their last nine games at Rogers Centre dating back to 2006. In addition, the Blue Jays will be throwing three pitchers the Sox have never seen before, plus ace Roy Halladay in this series. Good times!

Critic's Corner:
No stars. Thanks for wasting my afternoon, Sox.
