WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Down for the “Count”

May 8 vs. Texas

KW's Daily Special:
Wild Turkey
A tribute to our starting pitcher tonight (2 WP, 1 HBP, no control)

Short Take:  The Sox play corpse-ball again while Jose Contreras pitches his way out of the starting rotation.

The 2005 World Series seems like twenty years ago. Once dominant starter Jose Contreras went into Friday night’s game against the Rangers knowing that his job in the rotation was on the line. Contreras couldn’t step up his game and got rocked for five runs over 3.2 innings, leading to a 6-0 victory for Texas. Contreras’ 0-5 record has now punched him a ticket to the bullpen,…or worse yet, Charlotte.

Emerging Sox-Killer Ian Kinsler gave the Rangers a quick 1-0 lead in the first by walking, stealing second and then scoring on an Omar Vizquel single. Who needs Ozzieball when you have Ronwashingtonball?

Josh Fields opened the floodgates in the 2nd inning with a throwing error to first on a groundball by David Murphy, leading to two unearned runs. Chris Davis and Taylor Teagarden hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Kinsler grounded out into an RBI fielder’s choice to score Murphy, and then Contreras unloaded a wild pitch to allow Davis to score. 3-0 Rangers.

More hijinx from Contreras would ensue in the 4th as Ranger bats tattooed the classic Jose sidearm floater over the plate. Murphy doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. Teagarden was HBP. Ian Kinsler then squeezed in Murphy from third on a beautiful bunt. Vizquel doubled in Teagarden to increase the Texas lead to 5-0 before Ozzie pulled the plug on the Count and brought in resident innings-eater DJ Carrasco. It was a brutal outing for Contreras, never mind the error by Fields in the 2nd. DJ Carrasco would give up another run in the 6th on a rbi double by Teagarden to end the scoring.

The Sox bats never woke up the entire game, reaching base only five times the entire game (four hits, one walk). Getz, Fields, Dye and Lillibridge (playing CF for Pods) all reached base. Fields was thrown out at 2nd base on a blown hit-and-run when TCQ struck out. The only possible bright spot might be Jayson Nix, who drew a walk and looked pretty solid at the plate, almost hitting a homer to LCF. Other than that, this team looks dead. Most disconcerting was that this all happened off Rangers’ starter Matt Harrison, who holds a 4.79 ERA this year.

Lets get them tonight. Game time is 7:05 at the Cell. with Kevin Millwood for the Rangers against Johnny Danks (2-2, 3.81 ERA). Go Sox.

Call the Health Department to shut this place down.
