Payback Is A Stitch

April 25th vs. the Toronto Blue Jays

KW's Daily Special:
Hot Bats Warm Up A Cold Night
After a night of ice-cold offense, the White Sox found red-hot bats on a cold night in Chicago.

Short Take: Sox come back the night after a shutout with a big 10-2 win against the Jays.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, and it was cold tonight at Kenny's Burger Joint as master chef Mark Buehrle braved the rainy, 39-degree weather to pitch six strong innings against a hard-hitting Toronto Blue Jay offense. And highly offensive is what the Jays were on Friday night, beating the Sox 14-0. But after undercooking on Friday, the White Sox went back in the kitchen on Saturday and returned with some hot dishes in picking up a 10-2 win.

The Blue Jays looked like they were going to be offensive again, picking up two singles in the 1st inning. But Buehrle was able to cool their bats in the evening's chill and get out of the first without allowing a run. The Jays showed no manners as guests in Kenny's Joint as they scored two runs in the 2nd on a couple of cheap hits and a couple of atypical Buehrle walks. The Sox answered them with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd on RBI singles by Brian Anderson and Alexei Ramirez.

Things stayed chilly until the 5th, when in the top of the frame the Jays' Vernon Wells hit a hard liner deep in the left-center gap that was caught by Jerry Owens as he slid his outstreched glove on the warning track for a highlight-film special. In the Sox half of the 5th, Blue Jays starter Brian Burres was chased out of Kenny's Joint after giving up three walks and an RBI single to Paul Konerko. Shawn Camp came in for Burres and promptly gave up an RBI single to Brian Anderson, leaving the bases loaded for Alexei Ramirez. The Cuban Missle, whose rockets have been sputtering so far this season, sent a 3-2 pitch into the left-field seats for the fifth grand slam of his short big-league career. How does he do it? A good chef doesn't reveal his secret ingredient, but we can guess it has something to do with his spicy wild swing.

At the end of the 5th it was 8-2 Sox, and despite intermittent rain the Sox bats stayed hot. The Carlos Quentin (TCQ to his friends in Kenny's kitchen) was safe at first on a throwing error by the Jays' third baseman Scott Rolen. Jermaine Dye followed with a home run that was so similar to Ramirez's slam that you wonder if Jermaine got into Alexei's spice cabinet. Those two runs gave the White Sox a 10-2 lead. The night's chill clearly hadn't gotten into the hot blood of the Sox hitters.

Mark Buehrle was taken out after six innings, followed in Kenny's kitchen by Octavio Dotel, Matt Thornton, and Scott Linebrink, who each pitched an inning to finish the evening. The lights in the dining area of Kenny's Burger Joint were dimmed for a dessert of fireworks flambe' to celebrate the 10-2 victory.

Critic's Corner:
Alexei Ramirez and his grand-slamming ways brought the Sox in from the cold.
