Crede's Homecoming Not a Good Friday

April 10 vs. Twins

KW's Daily Special:
MacNuggets with Carrasco Sauce

Short Take:   Crede Homers in his First At-Bat at US Cellular as the Twins Crucify the Sox Bullpen

On Friday Night, Joe Crede and the Twins returned to US Cellular Field for the first time since Game 163 last September 30. With a lot less at stake, the Twins sliced through Sox pitching en route to a 12-5 victory. The story of the game, other than DeWayne Wise busting out of his 0-for-12 streak to start the season, was the meltdown of White Sox pitching.

Joe Crede was given a nice video tribute and standing ovation in his first at-bat of the game. Similar to Frank Thomas’ Oakland A’s return in May of 2006, Crede homered in his first time at the plate. Instead of Jon Garland, the victim in 2009 was Jose Contreras. Crede’s homer gave the Twins a 2-0 lead, and they would tack on another two runs off Contreras before he exited after the 6th. Contrary to what Ozzie Guillen said in the postgame show, Contreras didn’t look “good”. He let ten batters reach base safely through six innings, with seven hits, three walks, and another batter reaching on a throwing error by Contreras. Still, Contreras looked stellar compared to the garbage the Sox bullpen threw out there in the 7th.

Clayton Richard started the inning by giving up a homer to Justin Morneau and then a walk to Jason Kubel. Mike MacDougal relieved Richard by giving up two straight walks and not coming within the same zip code of the strike zone. Enter DJ Carrasco, who surrendered five straight singles and a sacrifice fly (Morneau’s second rbi at-bat of the inning) before finally retiring the side. When the carnage was complete, 12 Twinkee batters had driven in seven runs, including the first nine batters of the inning reaching base on either a walk or base hit.

The Sox offense was still sluggish, with Paul Konerko and Josh Fields showing signs of life. Konerko doubled and scored in the 2nd inning, with Chris Getz, on a clutch two-out single by Fields. Konerko slammed his first homer of the season, into the leftfield bleachers, in the third to momentarily give the Pale Hose a 3-2 lead, before the Twins tied it in the 4th. The only other bright spot of the game was TCQ getting on the board in the 7th with his first homer of the season, driving in Fields, and bringing the Sox as close as they would get in the game, down by 11-6. The Twins tacked on another run in the 9th for good measure.

Now with a record of 1-3 and a three game losing streak, the Sox send Bartolo Colon to the mound on Saturday, returning to US Cellular Field as a Sox pitcher for the first time since 2003. Colon has his work cut out for him as he faces Minnesota ace Francisco Liriano. Game Time is 3:05, Go Sox!

Critic's Corner:
 Hardly an edible performance.
