That Sucked

April 9, vs. Kansas City

KW's Daily Special:
Plate O'Garbage
I'm not joking, it's literally a plate of garbage fresh from the dumpster.  Enjoy, suckers!

Short Take:Does this sound familiar?  Danks pitches marvelously but is done in by lousy offense as Kansas City takes opening series, 2-1.

Hey, Sox fans, ask me if this sounds familiar; John Danks pitched a great game today but the Sox provided him absolutely no run support en route to a 2-1 loss to Kansas City in the rubber game of the season's opening series.  Through his first 60 career starts, Danks has amassed a record of only 18-22, thanks mostly to another pathetic performance by the so-called Sox "offense," that managed a total of 3 hits off Kyle Davies over 7 innings.

The game was scoreless through the first 8 frames, as the Sox tried their best to out-Royal the Royals.  Only once in the first 8 innings did they even put a runner in scoring position, when Josh Fields, who has become the most fearsome hitter in the lineup, singled and advanced a pair of bases on groundouts by Chris Getz and AJ Pierzynski, but Carlos Quentin struck out to end the threat.

Speaking of Getz, he lead off today as the Great Dewayne Wise Experiment has apparently and mercifully come to an end.  Getz proved to be little relief for the top of the lineup, going 0-4 with a K and 2 men left on base, though, truthfully Pierzynski, Jim Thome, Alexei Ramirez, and Wise also failed to record a hit today so it's hard to be too negative about Getz.  He was far from the only incompetent hitter.

If there was one bright spot today, the Sox pitching staff again came to play.  Danks went 6 very strong innings, striking out 5 and allowing 3 hits and walks, and yes, he did load the bases twice this afternoon, but he kept the Royals off the scoreboard so there's not much else you can ask from him.  Mike MacDougal relieved him in the 7th and almost immediately lost the game, but Matt Thornton doused the fire.  Octavio Dotel had a great 8th inning and Bobby Jenks, well... He finally ended the streak of scoreless relief, allowing a double to Alberto Callaspo and a 2-run homer to Coco Crisp.  The Sox managed a meager threat of their own, mostly due to a lead-off double by Carlos Quentin, but the Sox needed to give up 2 outs just to get him home (though, that run ended the scoreless inning streak at 17), and after a walk to Paul Konerko and Alexei Ramirez reached on a error, the Sox had the winning run on base, but Wilson Betemit pinched hit for Brian Anderson and guess what happens when a utility player faces an All-Star closer in his first at bat of the season?  Strike out swinging.

Thankfully, the Royals are out of town and in come the Minnesota Twins, fresh off a shut out at the hands of Jarrod Washburn.  Tomorrow night Jose Contreras makes the first start of his remarkable comeback against R.A. Dickey.  Joe Crede will be making his first trip to Chicago as a Twin and there will be a brief pregame ceremony honoring our former All-Star.  Game time is 7:11 PM and it will be televised on Comcast Sports Net.

WSI's
Critic's Corner:
The pitching was excellent but it's overshadowed by the Sox's terrible offense.  If I could give today's performance negative stars, I would.

The Carlos Quentin

His 9th inning double was the lone extra base hit of the day and he plated the only run of this very, very crappy day.
