SOXtober, Here We Come!

September 30 vs. Baggie Dome Twinkies

Sox Magic Number:
0
"Checkmate, Minnesota! You Lose!"

Short Take:John Danks, Jim Thome, and our Palehose gave the Twinkies the middle finger in a tight, hard-fought victory to move on to play October baseball.

They say whomever laughs last laughs the longest. That idea rung so true on the last night this September of 2008 in the most crucial baseball game of the season. After being completely embarrassed last week in a sweep at the Dump Dome, where the Twinkies acted like they won the World Series, our Palehose were pissed off, and it showed. Mark Buehrle, Paul Konerko, and AJ Pierzynski (just to name a few) were all interviewed commenting how upset they were by last week's events, and that they were going to do everything that they could to more than deliver revenge to those losers from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. On the South Side of Chicago, our beloved Men of Summer cut the Twinkies' life support line in one crushing blow, as well as a relentless pitching performance by John Danks, in a 1-0 victory, which gives the last playoff spot to our Sox!

The atmosphere from even before the first pitch was extremely special. There were over 40,000 die-hards out there, most of them dressed at least partially, if not all in black for Brooks Boyer's "Blackout" promotion. The beauty of this night was the scarcity of Twins fans in the crowd. They just did not have the time or resources to travel like they usually do during the season. Because of that, it was the Sox fans who rightfully took charge of their home, and it stayed like that throughout the whole game. If you were sitting in your seat, you were in the minority. This game was so intense that nobody could sit very long.

For the first six innings, Danks and Nick Blackburn pretty much matched each other pitch-for-pitch. The bases did not see many tenants, as each pitcher was throwing some filthy stuff, creating a very tight game situation. The nail-biting escelated in the top of the fifth when the unthinkable happened. With Michael Cuddyer on third, Brenden Harris flew out to Ken Griffey Jr., who snapped that ball directly to AJ. Cuddyer hauled home, but AJ blocked home plate and easily tagged him out, showing the ball to the umpire to make sure the out was called. Comiskey Park errupted.

When it looked like this game was going to go scoreless for eternity, Jim Thome put the entire team on his back for a ride in the seventh frame, as he led off that frame hitting a 461-foot round-tripper in the direction of the Fan Deck, which resembled one he hit just a couple months ago. Immediately when the ball left his bat, Comiskey was in pandemonium, and euphoria lasted for the remainder of the game.

After eight strong innings by Danks, it was Bobby Time, and Bobby was pitching better than ever! During the ninth, the Sox Slogan Share the passion; Show the swagger couldn't have been more present. Bobby made quick work of that cocky S.O.B. Jason Kubel. After Denard Span hit a grounder to Nick Swisher, Swish waited a little bit, slowly approached the bag, and unleashed every bit of swagger he had, tagging that bag with his foot in an "in-your-face" kind of way right in front of the Twinkies' dugout. The man-child Brian Anderson made a spectacular catch to end the game, and the celebration was on. For the first time since 1993, our beloved were able to clinch something at home! Just marvelous! And all of the fans who were there experienced a game that will forever be known as a classic.

Our Sox didn't just get revenge tonight, they one-upped the Twinkies. While the Twinkies and their fans have nothing to look forward to until next spring, our Sox have bigger things to think of. It's called October baseball, or, as most Sox fans like to call it SOXtober! It is an extremely proud moment that we as Sox fans get to see our team in the postseason for the third time this decade attempting to win their second World Series in the same span of time. Watch out, Tampa! You have a hungry team to deal with. Tomorrow afternoon, our Sox will begin their quest for the trophy. Tune in to TBS at 1:30 to see Javier Vazquez try to put the season behind him and start things off right.

Let's go, go go White Sox! Chicago's proud of you!
