Sox Are a Royal Pain for Kansas City

September 19 at Kansas City

Sox Magic Number:
7
"Norberto Martin would be proud."

Short Take:  Grand Slam by Alexei Ramirez and two homers by Dewayne Wise reduce Sox magic number to seven

Coming off a tough series in the Bronx, the White Sox offense exploded for nine runs on Friday night in Kansas City to defeat their AL Central counterparts by a score of 9-4. Leading the charge were Alexei Ramirez and Dewayne Wise. The Cuban Missile blasted his third grand slam of the season, the most ever by an American League rookie, while Wise contributed two homers of his own. The victory (85-68 on the year) pulls the Sox 2.5 games ahead of Minnesota with nine games to play (eight games left for the Twins), three ahead in the loss column, and a magic number of seven.

Sox starter Mark Buehrle and KC starter Brian Bannister battled through the first three innings without giving up any runs. Alexei Ramirez had a chance to score in the top of the 3rd, but a botched hook slide caused him to miss the plate as he was tagged out to end the inning. However, the Sox offense came alive and Alexei redeemed himself in the very next inning. Jermaine Dye led off with a double and advanced to third on a base hit by Mr. Incredible Jim Thome. With two men on, AJ Pierzynski drew a walk to load the bases for Alexei. After battling hard and fouling off six pitches, TCM flipped a slider over the leftfield wall for a grand slam to give the Sox an early 4-0 lead. The inning wasn’t over though, as “Dirty .230” (being generous there) drew a walk and moved to third on hot-hitting Juan Uribe’s double. A wild pitch brought Swish home, and Orlando Cabrera got off his cell phone long enough to drive Mr. Profundo in to give the Sox a gigantic six run lead.

Sox-killer Mark Teahan got half the runs back for KC in the bottom of the 4th. Buehrle let Mike Aviles reach on a base hit before picking him off just as quickly. Just call it Buehrle being Buehrle. The next batter, Jose Guillen, reached on a hit before Ryan Shealy was kerplunked. With two on, Teahen hit a bomb to LCF. Make it 6-3 Good Guys.

The Sox put another run on the board in the top of the 5th with Thome’s 33rd blast of the season (#540 for his career) into the foliage in right-center below the fountains. The offensive hero for the last three innings was journeyman Dewayne Wise, blasting his 6th and 7th dingers of the season (both solo shots) in the 7th and 9th innings, respectively, to give the Sox some nice insurance. The Royals tacked on a meaningless run off Matt Thornton in the bottom of the 7th when David DeJesus singled home Alberto Callaspo, but the highlight was Dewayne Wise firing a bullet from leftfield to gun down DeJesus attempting to stretch his single into a double to end the inning.

Mark Buehrle earns the victory for the Sox, moving his record to 14-11 on the season. Hopefully he can add one more W before the end of the year to get to 15. Credit Floyd’s kid with the loss (8-16). He can’t pitch inside either. Octavio Dotel and Scott Linebrink pitched encouraging, scoreless innings to close out the game in the 8th and 9th. It was a terrific win for the Sox, but let’s hope they can win at least one more, if not two, this weekend before heading to the showdown of showdowns in Minnesota. Keep it going!
