Sox stay on top

September 3 at Cleveland Indians

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
Aces
Vazquez, Dotel, Thornton, & Jenks keep the Indians down!

Short Take:   Vazquez strong as the Sox score enough to walk away from long roadtrip 4-6.

For the second series in a row, the Sox avoid being swept. This time holding off the Cleveland Indians in today's 4-2 win to close out the disappointing road trip that saw the Sox go 4-6 and not distance themselves from the Twins.

The early game was scoreless through four innings until Nick Swisher hit a solo run home run off Indians' starter Jeremy Sowers in the fifth inning. Orlando Cabrera doubled in Josh Fields in the frame to give the Sox a 2-0 lead.

Alexei Ramirez added two more runs off one swing in the sixth with a two run homer, giving the Sox a 4-0 lead.

Vazquez returned the favor to the Indians in their half of the sixth. The Indians started the inning off with a single and a double putting Vazquez in a huge jam. Luckily for the Sox, Vazquez calmed down and retired the next two batters before Jhonny Peralta doubled to score the two base runners cutting the Sox lead to 4-2. Vazquez got Shin Soo-Choo to ground out to end the inning.

While the Sox bats took the rest of the game off, the Sox pitching really worked for this victory. Octavio Dotel started the seventh and with one out, walked Sal Fasano on a full count. Victor Martinez then fouled out. With two outs, Dotel surrendered a bunt single to Asdrubal Cabrera putting runners on first and second. Dotel was pulled before some meltdown took place and Matt Thornton took over. Thornton made Sox fans reach for some booze when he walked Grady Sizemore on four pitches. Luckily, pinch hitter Franklin Gutierrez flew out and ended the madness.

The Indians weren't done screwing with the Sox though. In the eighth, with Thornton still in the game, Ben Francisco led off the inning with a single. Two batters later with one out, Shin Soo-Choo singled putting runners on the corners with one out. Ozzie had seen enough and yanked Thornton. Bobby Jenks was brought on to clean up the mess. Jenks was able to get Ryan Garko to ground into the inning ending double play to keep the Sox 4-2 lead.

Jenks recorded another double play to help the cause in the ninth to nail down the win. In all, Jenks threw 10 pitches to record 5 outs today. The 4-2 win gives our Sox a 78-61 record. Tomorrow the Sox return home and have a much needed off day before they open a ten game homestand. The A.L. best Los Angeles Angels come to town to open a three game series on Friday. Mark Buehrle and Jered Weaver take the ball for their first place teams for the 7:11pm start. The game is televised on Comcast SportsNet.
