WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Cliff Lee, FTW!

September 1 at Cleveland Indians

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Short Take:   Cliff Lee picks up 20th win as Sox are shut out for second time in four days

Cliff Lee has 20 wins? What the hell? He picked up a no decision the only other time the Sox faced him this season (July 1). He had the Sox number then just as he did tonight. Back then, the Sox at least got a run out of their six hits and held him to eight innings of work. Tonight, the Sox can only muster five hits, score no runs, have no walks and strike out four times as Lee goes the distance. The game started with promise as Cabrera and Pierzynski both reached on singles in the first to put the first two men on with no outs. A Quentin strikeout and Dye double play ends the threat. It would be the only Sox hits until the eighth inning...

Richard started on the right track by putting the Indians down 1-2-3 in the first but then gave up runs in each of the next three innings. The leadoff walk in the second came around to score, the leadoff man reaches in the third on Richard's throwing error and ends up scoring and with two outs in the fourth, Richard gives up three straight doubles as the Indians score another pair. A leadoff walk in the fifth and that was it for Richard. 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R (3 earned but the unearned was by his own error), 2 BB and 2 K. 82 pitches, ugh.

Bright spot of the night goes to the Sox middle relief. Wassermann, Logan and MacDougal combine for four innings of no hit, one walk ball. Wait, MacDougal? Yes, he is back from exile and pitching for the first time since April. He pitches a perfect eighth with one strikeout. The eighth also highlighted the Sox first hit since the first, a one out single by Konerko. It goes for naught as Swisher flies out and Ramirez strikesout to end the inning. The Sox show some more life in the ninth as Crede and Cabrera hit leadoff singles. Pierzynski flies out and just like the threat is erased in the first, a Quentin double play bookcases the complete game for Lee. It takes Lee 109 pitches to secure his fourth complete game of the season and the second of which is a shutout. Sox lose, 5-0.
