A House of Horrors It Was Not

August 16 at Oakland Athletics

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
Full House
Excellent starting pitching, solid relief out of the 'pen, and timely hitting... for now. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Short Take:   John Danks was great and the defense a little shaky, but excellent pitching prevailed.

After the Sox collapsed yet again in the House of Horrors known as McAffee Coliseum last night, the team looked to break the self-induced hex they seem to put on themselves in each season over the last seven in Oakland. Fortunately, they sent John Danks to the hill and he was his usual sharp self. Aside from five walks and an earned run, he was dominating, holding down the Oakland offense and prevailed with a 2-1 victory.

Similar to last night, the Sox didn't wait long to score. In the top of the second, Paul Konerko led off with a double to left and after Alexei Ramirez grounded out to short stop, Juan Uribe also doubled, bringing Konerko in with the first Sox run of the afternoon. With Uribe on second, Toby Hall singled to right center, scoring Uribe and giving the Sox a 2-0 lead.

John Danks ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third, but escaped with just one run. Kurt Suzuki doubled to left and thanks to an error by Nick Swisher, Frank Thomas reached first on the dropped fly ball. Emil Brown singled to center, and Suzuki dented the plate with what would end up being the only Athletics run of the game.

The White Sox bullpen- Matt Thornton, D.J. Carrasco, and Bobby Jenks- pitched three innings of shutout baseball, holding the A's to just the one earned run. Bobby Jenks nailed down his 25th save of the season by retiring the A's in order in the bottom of the ninth.

The Sox look for the ever important series victory tomorrow afternoon and hope the Coliseum doesn't serve as the House of Horrors it has for 28 ballgames over the last seven seasons. Coming off a shutout of the Royals on Tuesday night, Javier Vazquez (9-10) looks to continue his dominance against former White Sox hurler and current Oakland starter Gio Gonzalez (1-1). The first pitch is set for 3:05p CDT and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

WSI's
Quest For the Final Table Update:
Since Seattle didn't help the Sox out in the Baggie Dump, they're still tied for first place.
