Sox Slam the Door on the Dumpster

June 27 vs. Cubs

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Four of A Kind
Swisher's Grand Slam makes Kenny a genius. Rowand can't play first either.

Short Take:   Nick Swisher’s Grand Slam helps bury Ryan Dempster and the Laughable Losers; Jose Contreras Wins his 50th Game in a White Sox uniform.

Payback started this afternoon at beautiful US Cellular Field in front of 39,131 fans. The first place Chicago White Sox opened up a can of destruction on the overrated, over-hyped north side professional baseball club. This afternoon’s 10-3 dismantling of the Scrubs was the first victory in an inevitable three game sweep of the blue-clad media darlings. With a perfect mix of quality starting pitching, untouchable bullpen relief and a monster offensive display, the Sox secured their third win in the last four games, upping their season record to 44-35 (25-11 at home) and holding their 0.5 game lead over the pesky Twins.

Jose Contreras pitched six quality innings to earn his 7th victory of the season and the 50th of his White Sox career. The Count scattered seven hits and two walks over the afternoon. Geovany Soto and Mike Fontenot touched up Jose in the 5th with back-to-back solo homers, while Jim Edmonds followed suit to start the 7th. Those three solo shots would be the only garbage-time production the Flubs could muster, as the game was well out of reach by then. The Sox bullpen (Boone Logan, Octavio Dotel, and Nick Masset) pitched the last three scoreless innings to nail down the victory.

The Sox offense destroyed Ryan Dempster (9-3), who still can’t buy a win on the road to save his life. Dempster’s embarrassing 2.1 innings on the mound today yielded seven hits, three walks, and eight earned runs. The scoring started early as the Sox manufactured a first inning run on an Orlando Cabrera single, AJ Pierzynski flyball, and TCQ RBI single. The floodgates opened in the third inning when the Good Guys exploded for seven runs when seven straight Sox batters reached base. With one out, the line began to move: OC doubled and then scored on a single by AJ (with an error by Eric Patterson). TCQ doubled to score AJ, after which Jermaine Dye singled to score Quentin (4-0 Sox). With Dye on first, Jim Thome and Joe Crede walked consecutively to load the bases for “Dirty .237” Nick Swisher. The Dumpster gave up the gopher ball to Swish, who promptly deposited the ball into the left-centerfield bleachers for his 9th homer of the season and 3rd career grand slam.

The Sox tacked on some added insurance in the 6th inning by scoring a run with three consecutive singles by AJ, TCQ and JD. In the 8th, TCQ singled and scored on a JD double to finish the scoring. Sox win 10-3.

So, it was an encouraging offensive display by the Sox today. Quentin looked awesome with four hits, and Dye had three hits of his own, driving the runners in like a good cleanup hitter should. Swish gets the Pick to Click award though as he hit the biggest homer of his Sox career to date. Javy Vazquez (7-6) takes the hill tomorrow against Sean Gallagher (3-3) at 2:55 on Fox for the second win of this three-game sweep by the Sox.

WSI's
Quest For the Final Table Update:
Need some help from the Brewers this weekend. Hopefully they're still not mad about that Jamie Navarro for Valentin and Eldred trade.
