Flop at the Trop

May 30 at Tampa Bay

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hand
2-2-2-2-8
2 K's for Thome, 2 K's for Swish, 2 GIDP, 2 bad bunt attempts, 8 Team LOB

Short Take:   Kerry Sayers’ heart-throb Cliff Floyd wins the game for the Rays; Swish continues to suck the lifeblood out of this team.

The AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays beat the Sox on Friday night in front of a record crowd of 14,679 at Tropicana Field. The defeat drops the Sox record to 30-24 on the season, six games over .500. Yet, the Pale Hose still cling to a 2.0 game lead in the AL Central after a Twins’ loss to the Yankees tonight.

Former 2005 World Series chump Dan Wheeler (13.50 ERA vs. the October ‘05 Sox) earned the victory tonight. However, the pitching hero for the Rays was their starter, James Shields, who went 6.0 innings while giving up only one earned run. Shields dropped his season ERA to a respectable 3.24, but the Sox certainly had their chances to score off of him early. The Sox loaded the bases in the top of the 2nd with one out before “Dirty .203” Nick Swisher bounced into a weak double play to end the inning. In the third, the Sox put their first two runners on base before AJ Pierzynski’s two pathetic attempts at putting down a sacrifice bunt resulted in a strikeout, which was followed by Carlos Quentin bouncing into another inning-ending double play. In the 4th, Jermaine Dye was stranded at 2nd base after a leadoff double.

Jose Contreras (5-3) was the hard luck pitcher tonight, once again saddled with a no-decision after an outstanding effort. Contreras scattered five hits over 7.0 innings and dropped his season ERA to a phenomenal 2.89. In 11 games started, Contreras has only given up three home runs, while only walking 19 batters. In the month of May alone, he’s only given up one gopher ball and eight walks. Contreras was solid for the entire game and deserved the win.

The Sox tied up the game in the top of the 6th when the Cuban Missile, Alexei Ramirez, hit his second homer of the year (both of which occurred on Friday nights) to tie the game at 1-1. Shields was replaced by Al Reyes in the 7th , JP Howell in the 8th, and Dan Wheeler in the 9th, all-together holding the score tied and striking out four Sox batters.

Scott Linebrink pitched the 9th and made one mistake by giving Cliff Floyd a belt-high fastball, which was murdered over the centerfield wall, even too high for centerfielder DeWayne Wise to keep in the park. Brian Anderson would have had it!

The series continues tomorrow in Tampa Bay with an another outstanding pitching match-up. The Sox send Javy Vazquez to the hill (5-3, 3.52) to face lefty phenom Scott Kazmir (4-1, 1.50). Hopefully the anemic Sox offense will wake up in time to look better than they did tonight. Swisher and Thome in particular need to wake up out of the month-long coma they’ve been in. The game starts at 5:10pm tomorrow (670am WSCR), but television won’t begin until 6pm on Comcast Sportsnet. Thanks Fox; Go Sox.
