This One Really Hurt

May 4th at Toronto Blue Jays

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
Jokers, anyone?

The biggest jokers were the ones in blue.

Short Take: Sox lost a game 4-3 that they probably should have won 3-1. More on this later.

Well, the Sox werenít supposed to win this game anyway since they were facing the peerless Roy ďDocĒ Halladay who, in addition to being absolutely unhittable, routinely bites rattlesnakes in half, wrestles alligators, and never lets a day go by without saving a child (or children) from a burning building. At least thatís the impression one might get from listening to Hawk and DJ rave about him. And based on the fact that the Good Guys went down in order in the first three innings (including four strikeouts), one might think there was actually something to this. Then again, our own Jose Contreras wasnít bad either, if you donít count grooving a pitch to Matt Stairs (!), who came around to score in the bottom of the second. After two, Jays lead 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, things got interesting. Gregg Zaun singled to right to start things off. Not good. Alex Rios doubled to center, Zaun to third. Not good. Then, it all got worse. David Eckstein grounded to Orlando Cabrera who tagged out Rios and threw to first. At least, thatís what ACTUALLY HAPPENED. And maybe if the second-base umpire had had his head in the game instead of (fill in the location), that would have been a double play and there would have been a runner on third and two out, instead of second and third and one out. Next batter, Rolen, hit a line drive to Crede. Which would have been a third out. But instead they had second and third and two outs, which came back to bite them when Matt Stairs doubled in two runs. They got another one and the score stood at 4-0 after three.

Top four, Nick Swisher doubled and Cabrera was safe on a throwing error, which David Eckstein managed to do all on his own without any help from the umpires. Thome singled, scoring Swish and sending OC to second, Paulie doubled to left, scoring Cabrera and sending Thome to third, JD struck out for the first out of the inning, AJ grounded out, scoring Thome, and Carlos Quentin got HBP. Unfortunately, Clutch Crede wasnít, and the inning ended. Sox were back in a game that they should have been winning. After four, Jays 4, Sox 3.

The rest of the game was an exercise in boring. Three up, three down, three up, three down, Three up, three down, three up, three down, Three up, three down, three up, three down, FOUR up, three down, three up, three down.

Final score: Jays 4, Sox 3. Meanwhile, Detroit is in the process of blowing a game to the Twins after leading 6-0 at one point. This would bother me a lot more if it were September. As would this loss. Tomorrow, Sox tee it up again vs. the Jays. Start time 6:07 Central. Javy Vazquez vs. Dustin McGowan. Oh, goody; another guy with a career ERA of close to 5.

Quest For the Final Table Update:
We need to avoid playing in domes and on artificial turf for a bit.
