Burres Outduels Danks

April 26 vs. Orioles (Game 1)

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

Short Take:   Danks makes one mistake that the Sox bats can't overcome

They say it is difficult to sweep a doubleheader, so hopefully the White Sox got their requisite loss out of the way this afternoon. The Pale Hose dropped the first game of today’s day-night twin-bill against the Baltimore Orioles in discouraging fashion and, in the process, spoiled a nice effort by starting pitcher Johnny Danks. Meanwhile, Orioles starter Brian Burres humbled the Sox at the plate, giving up only three hits in eight innings of solid work.

Danks held a perfect game through five innings until the O’s Adam Jones singled to center to begin the sixth. The next batter, Guillermo Quiroz (a career .229 hitter as a back-up catcher, with only 18 plate appearances this year) made history by hitting his first major league home run, giving Baltimore a 2-0 lead. It’s a bit surprising that Ozzie Guillen decided it wasn’t necessary to go out and calm Danks down with some encouraging words after Jones broke up the perfect game.

The Good Guys trailed 2-0 until the 9th when things got really sloppy. The Orioles tacked on three more runs as Octavio Dotel did his best impersonation of Ryan Bukvich, complete with a throwing error and wild pitch. A rare error by sure-handed Paul Konerko led to the first run of the inning. Brian Roberts delivered the “HGH Shot of the Game” as he drove in two more runs with a double to centerfield that glanced off the glove of Alexei Ramirez. Brian Anderson would have had it.

The Sox trailed 5-0 going into the bottom of the 9th, but they didn’t go down without a fight. Toby Hall reached base with a solid single but was forced at 2nd on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Orlando Cabrera. The Sox loaded the bases after a walk to Jim Thome and a single by PK. With the save-situation now at hand, the O’s hooked Matt Albers for their closer George Sherrill, who promptly plunked Carlos Quentin. Credit TCQ with the RBI. The stage was set for “Joe-Joe The-Late-Inning Hero” ™ as Crede stepped to the plate as the tying run, but a weak pop-out to right field gave Baltimore the win. Burress (3-1) earned the victory, and Sherrill notched his 9th (!) save of the season. Incidentally, both of the key players the Orioles obtained from Seattle in the Eric Bedard trade contributed mightily to this victory.

Burres owned the Sox this afternoon. Although the starting pitching continues to be a pleasant surprise, the bats need to heat up. Buehrle takes the hill in the nightcap against 74-year old Steve Trachsel. The game will be televised on WGN with a 6:05pm start. Let’s not get swept.

WSI's
Quest For the Final Table Update:
Sox still lead the AL Central, but they need to play better hands against teams with a lineage to the St. Louis Browns.
