Not On the Mark

April 19 at Tampa Bay Rays

"These ain't your daddy's White Sox... We're going to keep going after a championship as aggressively as we can."

KW's Hole Cards:
Pure Bluff
Buehrle just wasn't himself tonight, though he wasn't exactly helped by his defense, either.

Short Take:   Buehrle & Co. were handcuffed by Andy Sonnanstine, who pitched a three-hit shutout.

Having won seven in a row against the Rays dating back to last season, it seemed as though the Sox were just supposed to win this game, regardless. However, Andy Sonnanstine and the Rays had other plans, spoiling the Sox's winning streak against Tampa Bay, blanking them 5-0, and handing the Sox their first shutout of the season.

Our Ace seemed off from the words "Paly Ball" tonight, as he just didn't seem to have his command. Hits were allowed and he had difficulty finding the strike zone, but none of that was as relevant as the defensive play not made behind him in the second inning, leading to three gift runs for Tampa Bay. After Johnny Gomes was hit by a pitch, Buehrle had him caught between first and second and it seemed as though Mark would get out of the second unscathed. Hesitation in throwing to Cabrera on the part of Juan Uribe allowed Gomes to dive into second safely, setting up the rest of the damage. Eric Hinske brought Gomes in with a single, Shawn Riggans moved Hinske to second with a base hit of his own, and Jason Bartlett singled to right, driving in Hinske. The Rays continued the hit parade when Akinori Iwamura also singled, scoring Riggans, for the 3-0 lead.

Things went from bad to worse just two innings later for Buehrle. Johnny Gomes tripled to deep center and after Eric Hinske struck out, Shawn Riggans' sacrifice fly brought Gomes in for the fourth Ray tally of the night.

Buehrle seemed to regain some of his control, as he shut the Rays down until the seventh. With two out, Carl Crawford singled to center and B.J. Upton drove in the fifth and final run of the game with a double, for the final score of 5-0.

The Sox look to take the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon at The Trop, as John Danks (1-1) will look to continue his solid pitching against Tampa Bay's Edwin Jackson (2-1). The first pitch is slated for 12:40 CDT and the game will be broadcast on CSN.

WSI's
Quest For the Final Table Update:
The Sox folded in the second defensively, and never showed anything resembling a winning hand after that.
