April 22...How Sweep It--Ain't!

April 22 at Detroit Tigers

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Stale hot dogs
You bite down, but something doesn't quite taste right.

Short Take: Sox open 2007 0-fer-Sunday. Somebody tell these guys they don’t get Sundays off!!

The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville Nine that day. At least, not based on yet another crappy first inning. This was a see-saw game; yesss, no; yesss, no; YESSS, er, maybe not. And when all was said and done, you can put it on the board, NO. Final Score: Kittens 6, Good Guys 5. And I’ll bet you’re all dying to read this recap, so without further ado, let’s get to it.

First inning: our leadoff guy, Darin Erstad, got a hit. Pablo Ozuna popped out, but Big Jim Thome drew the first of three walks. However, Paul Konerko struck out—he would do that a lot today—and Jermaine Dye popped out, so all was for naught. Bottom of two, it looked like it would be a long day for Jon Garland. Four straight hits from the Kittens, and suddenly it was three-zip. I would have gone out shopping at this point, but it’s my turn to cover this thing, so….

But hark! Things started to look up for Sox fans in the top of two. AJ led off with a blast and it was 3-1. Joe Crede followed with a walk, but again it all went for naught. Still, JG got the side in order and after two, it was 3-1 Murder City Kitties.

Innings three and four were fairly boring, but in the top of five, Rob Mackowiak led off with a walk. Juan Uribe with a double, Erstad with his second hit, Pablo with a hit, and Big Jim with a walk, and all of a sudden, tie game. Back to the pitchers’ duel for the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Then in the top of eight, JD led off with a hit, Joe Crede hit a blast that gave the Sox a two-run lead and it all looked good. No problem through the eighth and when Ozzie brought in David Aardsma to pitch the ninth, I started to compose a paragraph about how sweet it was to see two former Cubs pitchers combine for a victory for the Sox. Ooops! No sooner than you could say “Ex-Cub factor,” Aardsma—with two outs—gives up a hit to Carlos Guillen and then Marcus Thames ties the score with a prodigious blast.

Anyway, the game stretched out for another few innings. But when all was said and done, Mighty Casey had struck out. (I guess this sort of serves us right for making fun of the Indians blowing a lead with two out the other day. Granted, this was a lesser choke job, but the result was the same. A loss.)
