Danks for a Valiant Effort, Pitchers

April 8th vs. Minnesota Twins

Back to the Grind,
or Just Grinded?

Today's Sox cut of meat:
Rare Tri-tip
Three young pitchers looked good, and with a little seasoning, they will no doubt get better.

Short Take: One bad inning ruins a stellar major league debut, but the pitching gives Sox fans reason to stay positive.

Today’s starting pitchers: John Danks vs. Whatsisname.

After watching the WGN pregame show, I seriously considered just sitting down on the spot and writing the world’s shortest TBGR. In fact, it would have been a haiku:

The Twinks have Johan
The Sox have no chance in hell
Why not just forfeit?

But they didn’t, and I am proud of them, despite the final score: Twins 3, Sox 1.

Anyway, on to the actual game. Danks started for the Sox and looked a little shaky, but managed nonetheless to retire the side in order in the top of the first. In the bottom of the frame, the Twins pitcher also looked shaky. He gave up two walks, but two strikeouts canceled them out. End of one: no score. In the second, five batters reached for each team, but neither was able to do any damage, and in the third, both teams went down in order.

It was starting to look like a good old-fashioned pitchers’ duel, but then came the top of the fourth. The first two Twins batters reached—never mind how; who cares?—and then Justin (fill in the blank) Morneau connected for a three-run homer. Danks struck out two of the next four batters, and the Sox were out of the inning, but the damage was done. Twinkies 3, Sox 0.

Three up, three down in the fifth and sixth for each team. David Aardsma came on in relief in the top of seven and retired the side in order again. The Twins pitcher—what was his name again?—did the same in the bottom of the frame. In the bottom of the eighth, some other Twins pitcher came in, and after getting Iguchi out, gave up a solo shot to Juan Uribe. It was 3-1 after eight. Unfortunately, that’s how it ended. Andrew Sisco came in in the ninth and held the Twinks scoreless, but despite getting two men on in the bottom of the inning, the Sox were unable to get the win off the Twinks’ closer.

Still, lots of positives to take away from this game. Our two relievers looked good, and John Danks showed a great deal of poise in his first major league start. Let’s make this the ONLY game we lose to these clowns!

Back to the Grind Update:
Not much grinding to be seen today, other than the pitchers.
