September 20 vs. Detroit Tigers

How was the trophy defended today?
They kissed the trophy goodbye tonight.

Short Take:  Another lifeless effort on the South Side pulls the plug on a team that was barely breathing.

If Monday night was the fork, tonight was the dagger delivered by Magglio Ordonez and the rest of the Detroit Tigers. A 6-2 loss by our Sox pretty much wraps up the 2006 season and sends Sox fans home wondering and debating where it all went wrong.

While Jon Garland pitched a decent game, it wasn't good enough for a offense that scored seven runs the night before. Tonight, the Sox bats would go cold against Jeremy Bonderman. The Sox stranded Scott Podsednik on third base to start the first inning setting up the long night. The Tigers struck in the third off our 17-game winner when Marcus Thames led off the inning with a single and scored on Brandon Inge's double. Next batter Curtis Granderson switched places with Inge to make it a 2-0 Tiger lead. Garland was able to retire the next three Tiger hitters with no further damage. But, in the fifth, the Tigers put more on the board. Inge and Granderson hit back to back singles setting up runners on the corners for Ivan Ro(i)driguez. I-Roid doubled scoring Inge making it a 3-0 Tiger lead. Sean Casey was able to bring Granderson home on a sac fly to center field making it a 4-0 hole.

The main difference between last season and this season is that last year whenever the Sox were down, you knew they would come back. This year, or better yet, the second half...not so much. With only a pair of solo home runs by Juan Uribe and Tadahito Iguchi in the sixth, Sox fans in the park pretty much knew the season was coming to a close and dreams of another World Series run were quickly fading away if they haven't already.

Garland was able to last through seven innings giving up five earned runs off twelve hits getting his sixth loss of the season. If you care, the final score was 6-2 Tigers putting the Sox at a record of 85-67. Six games behind first place Detroit and 5.5 out of the Wild Card. It would pretty much take a mircale now to make the postseason. It's the truth people.

Tomorrow, the Sox open their final home series of 2006. A four game series against the Seattle Mariners will begin at 7:05pm with Javier Vazquez on the mound for our still defending champs. The Sox get to face Jake Woods (5-3 4.19ERA) for the Mariners. The game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet.

Ozzieball Update:
Maybe it will return next year...
