Boom...Boom...Bust.

September 18 vs. Detroit Tigers

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't

Short Take: Jim Thome and Josh Fields hit milestone home runs, but the sliding Sox lose again.

If there was ever a time the White Sox needed to sweep a series, it was now: falling out of the division race and facing the Detroit Tigers for three games in front of a home crowd. This was one of their last chances to barge back into the playoff race, but despite the urgency of the moment, the Sox delivered a piss-poor performance and continued to slide out of contention, losing 8-2.

In what has become a sickening trademark of his 2006 season, Mark Buehrle started the game by giving up a home run. This time it was to Craig Monroe, who followed Curtis Granderson's leadoff single in the first inning with a round tripper to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

Buehrle struggled through the first inning, giving up four hits in a row, but was bailed out by a beautiful triple play. With runners on first and second and running on the pitch, Carlos Guillen lined out to Joe Crede, who quickly flipped the ball to Juan Uribe. Uribe stepped on second for the second out, and tagged the man who was running to second for the third out. This was the second triple play turned by the Sox in 2006, and a fleeting bright spot this night.

For the second game in a row, a former White Sox slugger went longball against his old team. This time it was Magglio Ordoņez, who hit not one but two solo homers, in the fourth and sixth innings. The score would remain 4-0 going into the bottom of the eighth.

Kenny Rogers continued the mastery he has enjoyed over the southsiders all season, going six innings and limiting the Sox to just four hits. Rogers also walked four, but despite that, the Sox just couldn't get anything going until late in the game, when it was already out of reach.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jim Thome blasted a no-doubt homer into the opposite field bleachers. With that, Thome joined Frank Thomas, Albert Belle, Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye in the exclusive Sox 40 Home Run Club.

But the Tigers weren't finished. In the top of the ninth inning, Brandon Inge rocked Brandon McCarthy for a three-run homer, and Monroe registered another RBI to make it 8-1 Detroit.

In the bottom of the ninth, Josh Fields also joined an exclusive club. On the second pitch he ever faced in the Majors, Fields knocked a home run off Jamie Walker. With that, Fields joined Carlos Lee and Miguel Olivo as the only White Sox players ever to hit a home run in their first at-bat. Congratulations to both Josh and Big Jim on their milestone homers this night, despite a sorry 8-2 loss.

The Sox look to rebound on Tuesday night. Freddy Garcia (14-9, 4.82) faces off against Justin Verlander (16-8, 3.42). Game time is 7:05pm Central. Come on you White Sox!
