Another 9th inning nervous breakdown

September 10 v. Cleveland

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't

Short Take:Sox unable to solve Sabathia, waste gem by Vazquez with 9th inning implosion.

The first two batters that C.C. Sabathia faced this afternoon reached safely on base hits. As a matter of fact, the second batter, Tadahito Iguchi, hit a two-run home run to give the Sox a quick lead off the Indians' ace. Unfortunately for the Sox and starter Javier Vazquez, that would be all the Sox would score as Sabathia would shut them down the rest of the way en route to a 5-2 defeat.

Vazquez pitched a gem of his own, holding the Tribe scoreless on one hit through 5 innings as the Sox held on to the 2-0 lead. The Indians finally got to Vazquez in the 6th, the inning which has done him in so many times before. With one out in the 6th, Vazquez walked rookie Andy Marte and allowed a triple to Grady Sizemore to get the Indians on the board. Jason Michaels would single Sizemore home to tie the game at two. Vazquez would limit the damage, and did not allow any more runs on the day. He would allow just two runs in 7 innings of work, with 10 strikeouts.

The Sox offense could do nothing against Sabathia. After the first two batters got hits, the Sox would tally only two more hits on the entire afternoon. Iguchi accounted for two of the four hits, and Pablo Ozuna and Jermaine Dye had one apiece. Vazquez turned over a tie game to Brandon McCarthy to start the 8th inning. After pitching an easy 1-2-3 8th, McCarthy allowed a leadoff home run to Victor Martinez in the top of the 9th to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead. Neal Cotts relieved McCarthy after a single by Ryan Garko, and he retired the only batter he faced on a sacrifice bunt. David Riske was next on the relief pitching carousel, and he allowed an RBI single to put the Tribe ahead 4-2. After striking out the next batter, Riske was pulled in favor of Boone Logan. Logan threw a total of 7 pitches, recording just one strike before he was relieved by Sean Tracy. Tracy threw a wild pitch to move runners to second and third before walking the next two batters to force in the Indians' 5th run of the game. Sabathia pitched the 9th to get the complete game victory as the Tribe refused to give the Sox a shot at their bullpen.

With the heartbreaking loss, the Sox remain 3.5 games behind division-leading Detroit, who lost again to Minnesota today. The Twins now lead the Sox by 1.5 games in the wild card race, and the Sox are still on the outside looking in. They now head west for an important 6-game road trip against Anaheim and Oakland before coming home for a series against Detroit. Tomorrow night Jose Contreras (12-7, 4.09) faces off against John Lackey (11-9, 3.54). Gametime is 9:05 pm CT and can be seen on CSN Chicago. Three weeks left in a tight pennant race--let's go Sox!!!
