Boom Goes the Dye-namite!

September 6 at Boston Red Sox

How was the trophy defended today?
Everything clicked: the bats, the starter and the bullpen.

Short Take: It was demolition night in Boston, with hitting and pitching pyrotechnics courtesy of the Sox.

Just as ESPN was starting up a whisper campaign about their beloved Carmines making a late run for the wild card, the White Sox crushed their dreams with an 8-1 shellacking of Boston on the backs of Jose Contreras, Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye, who became just the fourth member of the exclusive White Sox 40 Home Run Club.

Contreras was back to his dominant form and his splitter was dancing all night. He pitched eight strong innings, and no-hit most of the Boston lineup. Coco Crisp (3) and Alex Cora (1) would be the only Red Sox to get hits off El Conte this night.

Meanwhile, the Sox bats erupted off starter Kyle Snyder. Skipper Ozzie Guillen presented a shuffled lineup, with Ryan Sweeney leading off in CF and Scott Podsednik bumped down to eighth in the order. Thome led the way in the second inning with a solo homer. Paul Konerko, Joe Crede and Pods each followed with singles to load the bases. Starting shortstop Alex Cintron bounced a ground-rule double into the right field seats to drive in two. Pods was driven home on a ground out by Sweeney and that made it 4-0 Sox after two. The Sox would make it 5-0 in the third: Thome doubled, then was doubled home by A.J. Pierzynski.

The Red Sox scored their only run of the night when Crisp hit a solo home run in the third. That got the ESPN commentators clucking like hens about a comeback, but the southsiders retaliated with three more runs in the fourth to put this game out of reach.

Tadahito Iguchi singled, then Dye delivered a monster shot over the green monster. It was Dye’s 40th home run of the season, and he now joins Frank Thomas, Albert Belle and Paul Konerko as the only Sox players to hit 40 or more in a season. Thome singled again, moved to second on a Konerko walk, then "gently" dashed home on his tender hammy on a single by Pierzynski.

For a moment it was shades of 2005, as Contreras was relieved in the ninth by Dustin Hermanson. He brought the Red Sox down in order and preserved an 8-1 rout for the good guys. It was Contreras’s 12th win of the season, and the Sox salvaged one game out of this series to pull to within 4.5 games of division-leading Detroit.

The Sox look to extend this one game tear. Up next, they are back home to kick off a four-game series against Cleveland. Thursday’s matchup features lefties Mark Buehrle (12-11, 4.71) and Cliff Lee (11-10, 4.63). Game time is 7:05pm Central. Let’s Go Go Go White Sox!
