Running in Quicksand

August 31 v. Tampa

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't

Short Take: Sox squander another opportunity to gain ground on division leaders, fall to Devil Rays in 10 innings.

This was going to be the week the Sox would make a run at the Tigers. The good news is, the Tigers are having trouble coming by wins these days. The bad news is, it seems that every time the Tigers lose, so do the Sox. The White Sox had a golden opportunity today to sweep the Devil Rays and climb to within 3.5 games of the Tigers, but they allowed the Rays to come back and beat them 5-3 in 10 innings this afternoon at US Cellular Field.

The much-maligned Javier Vazquez took the mound today for the Sox against rookie Jason Hammel in what should have been a mismatch. Instead it was a pitchers' duel, with Vazquez allowing 2 runs in 6 innings of work and Hammel just 3 runs in 5.2 innings of work. The Sox struck first, when Jermaine Dye singled home Brian Anderson in the bottom of the 3rd to put the Sox ahead 1-0. Tampa came right back in the top of the 4th to tie the game at 1. The Rays got an RBI single by Travis Lee to score their first run. They threatened to score more, but with the bases loaded and just one out Vazquez pitched his way out of trouble to keep the score tied.

Tampa took the lead in the 6th off Vazquez. Dioner Navarro led off with a double, and eventually scored on a fielder's choice to put the Rays ahead 2-1. After the Sox put the first two runners on base in the bottom half of the 6th, it looked as if they might come up empty when Paul Konerko grounded into a double play. Enter A.J. Pierzynski, who delivered a two-run home run to put the Sox ahead 3-2. Matt Thornton pitched a scoreless 7th inning in relief of Vazquez, but in the 8th surrendered a game-tying home run to Navarro. In the 10th inning, Jorge Cantu hit a bases-loaded two run single off Brandon McCarthy to put the Rays ahead 5-3. The Sox went down in order in the bottom of the 10th as the Rays avoided the sweep.

The Sox fail to capitalize on the Tigers' woes and remain 4.5 games behind the division leaders. The Sox are clinging to a 0.5 game lead over Minnesota for the Wild Card as they head to Kansas City to take on the pesky Royals for a three-game series. Jose Contreras (11-6, 4.25) will look to rebound from his recent struggles against Runelvys Hernandez (4-8, 6.67), who beat the Sox the last time they faced him. Gametime is 7:10 pm CT and will be televised on CSN Chicago.
