Santana strikes again

August 20 at Minnesota

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't

Short Take: Twins take series win from Sox as Santana shuts them down yet again.

Johan Santana was his usual self today, which is typically pretty good. The Sox managed just one run in 7 innings off the Twins ace, falling 7-3 this afternoon at the Metrodome.

Javier Vazquez matched Santana pitch for pitch, with the minor exception of the third inning. The Sox took the lead off Santana with a run in the top half of the third. Pablo Ozuna singled and scored on a Tadahito Iguchi double to put the Sox ahead 1-0. The Twins answered with 4 runs in the bottom half of the third off Vazquez, three of them earned. Paul Konerko made an error which allowed Jason Tyner to reach safely to start the inning off. The Twins loaded the bases with one out off Vazquez to set up catcher Mark Redmond. Redmond ripped the first pitch from Vazquez into right centerfield to score two runs and give the Twins a 2-1 lead from which they would never look back. Michael Cuddyer singled to score Nick Punto, and Justin Morneau followed with an RBI double to put the Twins up 4-1. On that play, Cuddyer was gunned down on a close play at home plate by Juan Uribe, but the damage had been done.

Santana was now pitching with a 3-run lead, and the Sox offense was helpless against him. Santana held the Sox to 6 hits and struck out 5 batters with no walks in 7 complete innings of work. Vazquez kept the Sox to within striking distance, allowing a run in the 5th but nothing else as the score was 5-1 Minnesota going into the 8th.

Juan Rincon started the 8th for the Twins, and the Sox were able to mount a rally off him to cut the Twins' lead in half. With one out and Jim Thome on first courtesy of a walk, Konerko doubled. Jermaine Dye hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Thome with the Sox second run of the afternoon. Konerko would score on a single by Joe Crede, and the score suddenly was 5-3 with the Sox showing signs of life. Denys Reyes relieved Rincon, and he retired pinch-hitter Alex Cintron to end the inning. Neal Cotts relieved Vazquez to start the 8th inning, and he promptly gave the two runs back on a two-run home run by Torii Hunter to put them back up by 4. Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless 1-2-3 9th inning to give the Twins a 7-3 victory.

The Sox have a big week ahead of them as they head out to Detroit 5.5. games off the pace in the Central and one up on Minnesota for the Wild-card lead. Jose Contreras (11-5, 3.78) will look to duplicate his last outing against the Tigers in which he hurled a complete-game shutout. He will face rookie phenom Justin Verlander (14-6, 3.14). The Sox will play 4 in Detroit before coming home for a 3-game series aganist Minnesota. Gametime tomorrow is 6:05 pm CDT. Time to play like Champions.
