Redemption

August 17th vs. Kansas City Royals

How was the trophy defended today?
Just enough pitching and hitting.

Short Take: Mark Buehrle got his first win since June 27th, while Bobby Jenks recorded his Major League-leading 34th save, as our defending champs defeated Kansas City 5-4 on a beautiful August afternoon.

The Sox and Royals did something that has never been done in the history of the game this afternoon, as they both lead off the first and second innings with solo blasts. Fortunately, our Sox were able to score enough runs later on, and Mark Buehrle was able to pitch well enough, as our brief 2-game losing streak has been broken with a 5-4 victory for the Palehose over Kansas City.

After the Royals and Sox traded lead-off solo round-trippers in both the first and second (David DeJesus and Pablo Ozuna in the first, and Emil Brown and Jermaine Dye in the second), our Palehose were able to get a lead they would never relinquish the next inning. Sandy Alomar, Jr. lead the third inning off with a double and was sacrificed home by Jim Thome, giving our defending champs a 3-2 lead. Three innings later, the lead would be increased to 4-2, as Paul Konerko singled in Tadahito Iguchi, who walked to lead off the sixth frame.

Mark Teahen cut the lead in half with a home run off of Mike MacDougal in the eighth. After Thome mustered a two-out walk, and was pinch-run for by Scott Podsednik, Konerko came through once again, increasing the Sox' lead to 5-3 on a double scoring Podsednik in the same inning.

Bobby Jenks fortunately only allowed the leadoff walk (Ryan Shealy) to score, averting a bases loaded with one out situation with Mike Sweeney at the plate, nailing down his Major League-leading 34th save of the season. And so, our Sox split the four-game series with the Royals.

Much thanks goes out to the Cleveland Indians for defeating the Minnesota Twins this afternoon, allowing us to gain a game on the Twins in the Wild Card standings, leading the race over Minnesota by two full games (idle Boston now trails us by 2.5 games). The next 10 games can really help in deciding the fate of this ballclub, as our Sox take matters into their own hands with two series against the Twins and one with the Tigers. Our Sox seem to respond pretty well in big situations, which bodes well for them this weekend in Minnesota. Tomorrow night's game is a 7:10 starting time and can be seen on WCIU. Here's hoping that Freddy Garcia can nail down everyone he faces.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Scott Podsednik messed with Joel Peralta's head a bit, causing him to lose focus and allow Paul Konerko to bat him in, which proved to be the deciding run.
