WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Viva! Contreras!

August 11 vs. Detroit Tigers

How was the trophy defended today?
Great pitching, timely hitting, taking advantage of Tiger miscues, power when needed.

Short Take: Tonight was Elvis night on the South Side, and the Tigers checked into Heartbreak Ho-Cell. Hereís hoping they have a nice, long stay!

Jose Contreras pitched a three-hit shutout, and the Sox hitters broke out the lumber. The result? Good Guys 5, Bad Guys 0. Just the way we like it. But there are two more games to go in this series, so sing out Elvis fans!--"If I can dream of a three-game sweep, with Mark and Freddy both going deep. Oh, please let my dream come true."

Oh, yeah. The recap. Okay, here goes. First inning, the Tigers went 1-2-3, with the first two putouts coming at the hands of Absolute Alex Cintron and the third by Joe Crede. Scott Podsednik started things off in the bottom of the frame with a single and was sacrificed to second by Jim Thome, but Paul Konerko struck out to end the threat. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third. Again Pods started it off with a single. Detroit pitcher Justin Verlander seemed to take it personally and decided to pick him off. After several throws to first, he threw one that wasnít. When the dust had settled, Scottie was on third. He came around to score on a grounder by Tadahito Iguchi and the Sox led 1-0 after three.

And thatís where it stayed until the bottom of the fifth inning. Again Pods started things off, but he hit a fly ball to left for out number one. However, Iguchi followed up with an infield single and went to second on a throwing error by Brandon Inge. A homer by Big Jim and it was 3-0 Sox. Jermaine Dye singled to bring up A.J. Pierzynski, who homered to right center. Oddly enough, he didnít get booed as he rounded the bases. Oh, right; home game. Anyway, after five innings, it was 5-0 Good Guys.

In the top of the sixth, Joseís no-hitter was broken up by Curtis Granderson, who doubled. The Tigers would get two more hits over the course of the game, but the scoring was over. Jose finished off his first complete game shutout and looked like he could have pitched another five or six innings. One more time, Elvis fans, sing along!--ďWell, we won the game and it sure was fun. Tomorrow we play another one. Nice to see the same result, letís go out and beat the Tigers up. Mm mm, oh, yeah yeah.Ē

Important scheduling note: Because Fox seems to be in charge of everything and everyone, Saturdayís game time has been changed to a 12:15 Central start. And as usual, itís blacked out in a good section of the country.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Not much need for any particular strategic moves. Everything just worked!
