Escobar's Revenge

August 7 vs. Los Angeles Angels (rainout make-up game)

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't.

Short Take: The goat of the 2005 ALCS gets his revenge, beating the Sox in a rainout make-up game.

Maybe Kelvim Escobar used to wake up in the middle of the night, screaming “WHITE SOX! WHITE SOX! NO NO WHITE SOX!” The Angels’ starter was made into a goat on national TV during last year’s ALCS. He lost two games in the series, most notably Game Two, when A.J. Pierzynski made his infamous dash to first base on a dropped third strike. In Game Five, Escobar embarrassed himself when he tagged Pierzynski with the wrong hand and the Sox catcher was safe at first again, leading to Escobar’s second loss of the series.

His woes continued into 2006, when he lost to the Sox in April. But today would be the day of Escobar’s revenge. He pitched six strong innings and held the Sox to two runs, earning the win in what would eventually be a 6-3 final for Los Angeles.

It didn’t help the Sox’s cause that Mark Buehrle was unable to keep the Angels off the board. He gave up three solo home runs to Robb Quinlan, Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Molina.

With the score 2-0 in the fourth inning, Jermaine Dye got the good guys on the board with an infield single that drove in Jim Thome, who had doubled and moved to third on a fielder’s choice by Paul Konerko. The score was 3-1 in the sixth when Joe Crede drove in Tadahito Iguchi to make it a one-run game.

Unfortunately, the wheels came off for Buehrle in the seventh. Tim Salmon and Quinlan each singled, and Molina walked to load the bases. Buehrle and Konerko then seemed to botch a pickoff move, and a balk was called. Buehrle stepped towards first base, and prepared to make a throw, but Konerko was playing off the bag and did not make any move. In came the run. Chone Figgins followed up with a two-run single to make it 6-2 Angels. Thome blasted a solo shot in the eighth inning, but that would be it for the Sox as the powerful L.A. bullpen shut them down late for a 6-3 final.

Buehrle pitched six-plus innings, and gave up six runs off seven hits for the loss. The Sox look to get back on track when they host the New York Yankees for three games, starting with Freddy Garcia (10-7) against Chien-Ming Wang (13-4). Game time is 7:05 pm Central.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Instead of screwing around with matchups, Ozzie let Brandon McCarthy pitch two-plus innings of relief work. Granted, it was more of a clean-up situation, but Brandon stepped up and pitched shutout baseball. That and Thome’s homer were the few bright spots of this game.
