A.J. Leads the Hit Parade

July 29 at Baltimore Orioles

How was the trophy defended today?
A barrage of clutch hits with men on base.

Short Take: A.J. Pierzynski goes 5 for 5 and leads the Sox's scoring assault in a slugfest at Baltimore.

Ross Gload's clutch grand slam on Friday night was just the wake up call that the White Sox bats needed. They returned to Oriole Park and pounded out 18 hits to win the second game of this series against the Baltimore Orioles, 13-11.

The hit parade was led by A.J. Pierzynski. He went 5 for 5 on the day with four RBIs, starting in the first inning when he drove in Big Jim Thome. The Orioles would come back in their half of the inning against starter Jon Garland, who got off to a shaky start and coughed up three runs.

But the Sox would feast on first-time starter James Johnson the second time through the order. They sent ten men to the plate, starting with Thome. One by one, the Sox hitters moved men over and drove them in, culminating with a three-run blast by Tadahito Iguchi that made it 8-3 Sox. The O's got one back off Garland in the bottom of the third.

Johnson's major league debut ended after three innings and Russ Ortiz was called in to take his place. Jermaine Dye and Pierzynski greeted Ortiz with a pair of solo home runs that ran the score to 10-4. The O's rallied again in the sixth inning, scoring four runs off Garland and Brandon McCarthy. The hit parade continued all the way to the bottom of the ninth. Bobby Jenks took to the mound with a 13-10 lead, managed to cough up a run of his own, but finally slammed the door shut on Baltimore and the game ended 13-11. The Sox (18) and O's (19) combined for 37 hits on the day. Mercy!

Jim Thome was hitless on the day, but still scored four times (with four walks). His determined baserunning all afternoon was a good display of leadership. Gload got the start at first base so that Paul Konerko could rest his bruised leg, and he too showed great effort at the plate and on the basepaths. Hopefully the Sox will ride this momentum for a long, rampaging win streak into August.

For his five-plus innings of work, Garland got his 11th win, while Jenks recorded his 28th save. The Sox look for a sweep this afternoon at the Yard. Javier Vazquez (9-6, 5.33) gets the start against Bruce Chen (0-6, 7.02). Game time is 12:35pm Central.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Great hustle and leadership shown by Jim Thome, who motored his big body around the bases all afternoon and scored four times.
