Jenks Closes the Deal

July 5th vs. Baltimore Orioles

How was the trophy defended today?
Just enough offense, along with quality outings by both Jon Garland and Bobby Jenks.

Short Take: Jon Garland cruises along, while Bobby Jenks records his Major League-leading 26th save, as our Sox prevail over Baltimore 4-2.

After a nice mastery of the minor league team on the north side of Chicago, our home run-hitting pitcher Jon Garland was set for his first start against the superior league in MLB in nearly a month. With the Sox and the Baltimore Orioles splitting the first two games in this four-game set at Comiskey Park, Garland made sure that our boys in black got another tally in the win column, defeating Daniel Cabrera 4-2.

Our defending champs did all of their scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Scott Podsednik lead off with a walk and immediately put his wheels to good use by easily stealing second base. A couple pitches later, he scored on a hit-and-run play as Alex Cintron singled. Jim Thome "first-and-thirded" Cintron, who scored on a sac fly by Paul Konerko. Jermaine Dye and AJ Pierzynski both singled to load the bases for Joe Crede. After Crede walked, which scored Thome, Rob Makowiak was hit by a pitch, allowing Dye to come across home plate, giving the Sox a 4-0 lead after the first frame.

Garland was cruising along very well, only hitting one speed bump along the way in the sixth inning, where Kevin Millar, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a two-bagger by Brandon Fahey. Three innings later, Baltimore would add a token run off closer Bobby Jenks, when Jeff Conine doubled in Melvin Mora; but, they would not get any closer, as Jenks nailed them down, leaving ducks on the pond (Conine and Miguel Tejada) stranded by striking out the side! His 26th save gives him the league lead in the category. And so, Baltimore ultimately could only cut the lead our Sox had built up in that opening frame in half.

Our Palehose look to close the series out tomorrow night, as well as continue their recent dominance of Baltimore, by taking three of four in this series. Javier Vazquez faces off against Russ Ortiz, who is 0-5 with a pitaful 7.33 ERA. It would be great if our bats could take advantage of that and score in bunches in the series finale. Game time is at 7:05 Chicago time and can be seen on Comcast Sports Net Chicago if you can't make it to the game. Go Sox!

Ozzieball Update:
After leading off the game with a walk, Scott Podsednik stole second base and came home on a hit-and-run play.
