WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Unlucky 13th, but Go, Go, Iguchi!

June 25th vs. Houston Astros

How was the trophy defended today?
A noble effort came up just a little short.

Short Take: Another incredible Sox comeback in a heartbreaking loss.

This was another one of those games in which the first seven innings were not fun to watch. But the Good Guys, led by Tadahito Iguchi’s two home runs, put up a terrific fight in a 10-9 extra-inning loss. Maybe from now on the ESPN announcers will get Tad’s name right.

Javy Vazquez just never got on track, as Houston jumped out to a lead in the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Javy got Morgan Ensberg to fly out without scoring the runner from third, and it looked like he might escape unscathed. But a double by Preston Wilson scored the lead two runners and the score stood at 2-0. Unfortunately, Roy Oswalt was very much on track, and the Sox went down in order in the first. In the second, Paul Konerko led off with a double and things looked promising, but he was thrown out trying to advance to third on a fly ball off the bat of Jermaine Dye. Our guys finally got on the board with an Ozzieball run in the third inning, which made it 2-1 Astros. It stayed that way until the top of the fifth, when two Astros home runs made it 6-1. In the top of the 7th, the Astros added three more runs to make it 9-1.

Things were looking pretty gloomy for our heroes. A Paul Konerko solo home run provided a glimmer of hope in the bottom of the seventh, but the gap still looked insurmountable. Then, much as he did in Game Four of the 2005 World Series, Phil Garner made a move that seemed like a better idea than it was. He brought in a relief pitcher to “mop up” in the eighth. A single by Alex Cintron and another by Scott Podsednik set the table for Tad Iguchi, who parked it in the left field seats and suddenly it was 9-5. The Astros changed pitchers again and got out of the inning without further damage. Only problem was, they still had to play the ninth, and Garner brought in their “lights-out” closer, Brad Lidge. A single by AJ Pierzynski, a single by “Absolut” Cintron, a walk to Podsednik—and here comes Iguchi again. One grand slam later, it was a tie game!

All that was missing was the happy ending. Unfortunately, it was not to be. The scored stayed tied at 9 until the top of the 13th, when Adam Everett tripled and Willy Tavares singled him in. The loss sent the Sox to 1.5 games back in the AL Central, but they’ll no doubt come out smoking on Tuesday in Pittsburgh after an off-day on Monday. Game time Tuesday: 6:05 CST.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update: Not much of it until the late innings, but when it finally showed up, WOW!

Tadahito Iguchi

This was a tough call (NOT!), but two home runs and seven RBIs were just enough to put him over the top!
