All We Needed Was One!

June 22 vs St. Louis Cardinals

How was the trophy defended today?
Every which way! Garcia's best performance of the year! Thome's HR! Dye's glove!

Short Take:  After two blowouts, Sox use one hit to down Cardinals.

Of the three losses by the Cardinals this three game series, this is the one that has got to sting. The Sox scored 33 runs in 18 innings this week before not being able to muster a hit until the 7th inning against the N.L. Central's best team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Don't you love baseball!?! Tonight's 1-0 win sends Cardinals fans home with a long drive down I-55!

Freddy Garcia pitches his best game since game 4 of the 2005 World Series while the Sox were trying to figure out Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes. He pitched a no hit game until the seventh inning when Jim Thome crushed a pitch to the left field seats to make it a 1-0 Sox lead.

Freddy Garcia was dominate tonight. He pitched out of a few jams and recieved help from Jermaine Dye who in the fifth inning took away extra bases on a deep fly ball by Hector Luna. Dye who was down after the catch, got up and played the rest of the game and later in the home half of the fifth smacked a ball to right center field that So Taguchi had in his glove, but quickly popped out. Dye would be left on third base though. 99 pitches and four hits was Garcia's total through his eight innings of work. Bobby Jenks came in and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth securing the SWEEP of the NL Central leading Cardinals.

With all the off field "distractions" it's good to know our Sox can still play some baseball! Tonight's win puts the Sox just a half game behind the idle Tigers. Our record moves to a nice 47-25 on the 2006 season. Tomorrow, Jose Contreras will match up against Andy Pettitte which what will be the start of a three game series against the team we beat in the World Series last year! Game time is at 7:35pm and the game will be on WGN.
