A Glorous Sweep!

May 24 vs. Oakland A's

How was the trophy defended today?
Sweeping away the A's behind clutch hitting and another fine outing by Buehrle.

Short Take:  Sox claw their way back into the game to sweep the A's!

The last time our boys had a three game sweep of the Oakland A's in sweet home Chicago was in the days of the winning ugly Sox. Somehow, our 1997 Sox managed to get one in Oakland. But, tonight, our Sox were finally able to handle the team that have always given us fits with a 3-2 win!

Mark Buehrle picked up right were he left off last Friday. He brought his 2-8 career record against the A's and threw it out the window and got his sixth win of the season while both of Oakland's runs were unearned. In the third Buehrle was hurt on a passed ball allowing Mark Kotsay to move into second base, then to score on a Eric Chavez RBI single making it 1-0 A's.

The Sox came around in the fifth off Dan Haren. Rob Mackowiak led off with a double and two batters later Scott Podsednik hit a double to score Mackowiak to tie the game. Jim Thome knocked Pods in with an RBI single to give the Pale Hose a 2-1 lead. The Sox made it 3-1 in the sixth when Mackowiak singled in Jermaine Dye who led off the inning with a walk.

The game got a bit close in the eighth, but don't tell that to the fans in the park who proceeded to start the wave. With one out and runners on the first and third, Nick Swisher hit a fly ball that was a can of corn for Jermaine Dye but the ball went in and out of Dye's glove causing Chavez to score making it a 3-2 game. Again, an unearned run this time chalked up to Cliff Politte. The Sox got out of the eighth with no more damage thanks to Bobby Jenks who came on to strike out Jason Kendall. Jenks then worked a 1-2-3 ninth by getting Bobby Kielty to ground out and getting Mark Ellis and Mark Kotsay looking to end the game!

The 3-2 win puts the Sox at 31-15 still one behind the Tigers who played the patheitc Royals tonight. The Sox have an offday Thursday to head north of the border to face the Toronto Blue Jays. Freddy Garcia will make the start Friday against Ted Lilly. Game time is at 6:05pm and can be seen on Comcast SportsNet. Let's keep the wave away when the Sox come back home June 2 eh?
