Champs Roll!

May 19 vs Cubs

How was the trophy defended today?
What a better way to show off/defend our trophy by a smackdown on the Cubs!

Short Take:  The 2005 World Series Champs make the North Side their punching bag in today's 6-1 win!

It's that time of year again Sox fans! Chicago's own verison of the civil war started the 2006 version with Mark Buehrle and Greg Maddux taking the ball for Chi-towns teams. But, this year is a bit different. There really is no bragging rights on line anymore...or least for this year, our Sox are World Champs and the Cubs are doing their best to try and even compete with our far superior team. The South Side rose again in the series opener 6-1 behind a masterful outing by Mark Buehrle.

The Sox were coming off a horrible series in Tampa Bay dropping two of three and the Cubs made Sox fans quite for the first half of the first. Juan Pierre led off and got one of the two Cubs hits by hitting his way on with a soft single that Crede couldn't throw him out on, Pierre advanced to third base when Jerry Hairston Jr. reached base on his sac bunt that A.J. Pierzynski threw away. Todd Walker was able to score Pierre on a sac fly to center making it a quick 1-0 Cubs lead. But thats all the Cubs were able to muster up. Buehrle left Hairston at second base and rolled through the game.

The Sox struck back in the home frame of the first. With one out, Tadahito Iguchi singled and stole second, and later scored on a RBI single by Paul Konerko to tie the game.

The Sox let Buehrle roll the rest of the way and backed him up with a four spot in the third. With the bases loaded Paul Konerko doubled to left field scoring two to give the Sox a 3-1 lead. Jermaine Dye added a run on a ground out to Cedeno who looked like he may have had a play at the plate, but choose to get the easy out at first making it a 4-1 game. Two batters later Joe Crede drove a ball down the left field line to score Konerko and looked to be a sure double. But, Neifi Perez had other plans. He shoved Crede's hand off the base on the tag making second base umpire to call Joe out. It didn't matter- the run scored and the Sox were up 5-1 and never looked back. In the fifth, Jim Thome stuck a fork in Maddux, the Cubs and their fans who trecked to a "bad neighborhood" with a opposite field bomb giving the Sox a 6-1 lead!

The Cubs were clearly out matched by World Champs. Mark Buehrle went the distance giving up two hits while only giving up an unearned run.

Tomorrow, the Sox and Cubs go at it again. A bit earlier tomorrow. Rich Hill and Freddy Garcia will get the call for the 12:05pm start. The game can be seen on FOX.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Iguchi's stolen base and run in the first sets the tone for the game.
