Heavenly Sweep

April 30th at Los Angeles/Anaheim

How was the trophy defended today?
Ozzieball at its best. Fundamentals.

Short Take: Sox sweep Angels in hard fought series with come from behind win.

The White Sox went back to the scene of their coronation as AL Champions and swept a three-game series from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Cliff Politte was the winner in relief today of Jon Garland as the Sox beat the Angels 6-5 this afternoon.

Garland squared off against Ervin Santana as the Angels got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first. After Santana retired the Sox in order in the first, the Angels touched Garland for two quick runs in the bottom half of the inning. Orlando Cabrera doubled Chone Figgins home for the first run of the game, and eventually scored himself to give the Angels a 2-0 lead. The Sox tied the game in the third inning with a 2-spot of their own. Scott Podsednik singled with one out and moved to second on a single by Alex Cintron, who started at second base today. Jim Thome put the Sox on the board and drove in his 23rd run of the season with a single, scoring Podsednik. With Cintron on 3rd, Paul Konerko hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2.

The Sox took the lead in the top of the 4th. Joe Crede led off the inning with a walk, and scored on a single by Chris Widger to give the Sox their first lead of the game at 3-2. The score remained 3-2 going into the bottom of the 5th, when the Angels went back on top. Casey Kotchman led off the inning with a double, and scored on a sac fly by Figgins to knot the game at 3. With Adam Kennedy on base and two outs, Cabrera hit a two-run home run to put LA up 5-3. Garland pitched 7 innings today, yielding 5 earned runs on 5 hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Sox would keep the Angels from gaining momentum by getting the two runs back in the next half inning off Santana. Crede led off the inning with his second double of the game, and scored when rightfielder Rob Mackowiak hit a double of his own to cut the lead to 5-4. Mackowiak started the game in centerfield and moved to right in the 5th after Jermaine Dye left the game early with a tender calf. Juan Uribe then laid a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, moving Mackowiak over to third base with an out. Widger then hit a sac fly to center, scoring Mackowiak and tying the game at 5.

After relievers Matt Thornton and Cliff Politte combined to pitch a perfect 8th inning, the Sox manufactured what would be the winning run in the top of the 9th off Angels rubber-armed reliever Scot Shields. Widger led off the 9th with a single, and Pablo Ozuna came in to pinch-run for him. Ozuna wasted no time getting into scoring position, promptly stealing second base. Scott Podsednik then sacrificed Ozuna over to third base, and Ozuna scored on a wild pitch by Shields to put the Sox up 6-5. Neal Cotts came in to pitch the 9th inning, and all he did was pitch a perfect 1-2-3 inning to preserve the win and earn his first career save.

The Sox now end the month of April in first place with a 17-7 record, coincidentally the same record they had in April last year. The defending World Champs now head out to Cleveland for a quick two-game series against the hated rival Indians. Javier Vazquez (2-1, 3.67) will face off against Cliff Lee (2-1, 2.97) tomorrow night at Jacobs Field. Gametime is 6:05 pm CDT, and the game will be televised on CSN+.
