A Howler on Doggie Night

April 21 - Sox vs. Minnesota Twins

How was the trophy defended today?
Stud Pitching and a Big Offensive Inning!

Short Take: Buehrle outduels Santana and the Sox maul the Twins' pen to take the series opener with ease.

Fans brought their pooches to the ballpark and the Sox outpitched and outhit the Minnesota Twins for a 7-1 victory on Doggie Night at the Cell.

It didn't look like it would be a laugher at first. Mark Buehrle matched Johan Santana inning-for-inning in a duel of lefty aces. Buehrle retired the first 10 batters he faced, while Santana started the game by striking out the side. After five innings, the game remained scoreless.

The Sox finally got to the Cy Young winner in the 6th inning. Tadahito Iguchi hit a one-out single to left. Then, Big Jim Thome delivered a strongman's blast, launching a low Santana offering into the centerfield seats to make it 2-0.

In the top of the 8th, Twins' rightfielder Lew Ford messed up Buehrle's masterful performance by hitting a solo HR to make it 2-1.

Santana was lifted for Juan Rincon in the bottom of the 8th, and the Sox turned a tight game into a howler. Thome and Paul Konerko led off with singles, then Jermaine Dye doubled to score Thome. Konerko held up at third base on the play, but Twins' shortstop Juan Castro senselessly airmailed a throw over third into the Sox dugout. Both Konerko and Dye were waved home on the error to give the home side a four run lead. A freshly-groomed Joe Crede was up next, and he chased Rincon from the game with the fourth Sox hit in a row. In came Twins reliever Matt Guerrier to add some gasoline to the fire. A neatly-trimmed A.J. Pierzynski singled to move Crede to second. Crede went to third on a flyout by Juan Uribe, then tagged up to score on a flyball by Brian Anderson. Scott Podsednik added an RBI double for good measure, scoring Pierzynski. The Sox recorded 11 hits in the game, and Uribe was the only batter not to get at least one hit.

Buehrle pitched eight strong innings to earn his third win. He gave up one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out six Twinkies.

The South Siders look to continue their win streak on Saturday evening. Freddy Garcia (2-1, 7.80 ERA) faces RHP Brad Radke (2-1, 6.63 ERA). Game time is 6:05pm Central.
