Bombing The Red Sox!

ALDS Game One: October 4th vs Boston

Sox PLAYOFF Magic Number:
10
"The Southsiders stand just 10 wins away from eternal glory."

Right Sox Start Off Postseason On Right Foot!

The last time the Chicago White Sox won a home playoff game, Dwight Eisenhower was still President and poodle skirts were considered fashionable. But all baseball fans know that sooner or later streaks are made to be broken, and the Sox record of home playoff futility was shattered in grand fashion today as the White Sox soundly thumped the defending World Series Champion Red Sox 14-2, administering the best beatdown of a Boston team by a Chicago team since Super Bowl XX.

Red Sox skipper Terry Francona sent Matt Clement to the hill to start today's game. As a former Cub Clement and his goatee are no doubt used to getting lit up, and today was no exception. Clement lloked frazzled from the very first batter he faced, plugging Scott Podsednik, allowing the speedy Sox leadoff man to get on. Tadahito Iguchi laid down a perfect bunt just in front of the dirt near home plate, sending Podsednik to second. Clement plunked Jermaine Dye, Podsednik swiped third and Paul Konerko hit a grounder to second base that brought Podsednik home. The White Sox drew first blood and never looked back. Two batters later, Aaron Rowand brought Konerko home. Folliwing that, AJ Pierzynski snapped his homerless autumn with a 3-run blast to left field bringing home Rowand and Carl Everett. First inning, five runs, White Sox never looked back.

Meanwhile, Jose Contreras worked his filthy magic against the supposedly fearsome Boston lineup. Although he allowed hits in each of the first three innings, the big Cuban righthander got outs when he needed to and kept his usual nemesis Red Sox off the board. Paul Konerko belted a solo home run in the third, and the rout was on

Well, maybe the rout wasn't quite on yet. Trot Nixon led off the fourth with a single, and then Jason Varitek bunted to move him over. Joe Crede fielded the ball, then dropped it, then kicked it to move Nixon over to third. Somewhat flustered, Contreras fired a forkball in the dirt past Pierzynski to score Nixon and move Varitek to third. Varitek scored on a double past a diving Jermaine Dye, and the Red Sox were back within striking distance.

Then the Sox offense really woke up. Pierzynski led off the following frame with a double, and Juan Uribe drilled a Clement offering into the left field bullpen to extend the White Sox lead to 8-2, sending Clement off to a rousing chorus of "Na na na na" and sending the sellout crowd at US Cellular into delirium. From there, it was just a matter of padding the stats-Scott Podsednik hits a three0run shot for his first home run of 2005, Pierzynski belts another solo shot, and even defensive replacement Willie Harris gets in on the fun with an RBI single.

Contreras would exit the game to a rousing standing ovation in the 8th, while Neal Cotts and Cliff Politte worked 2 innings of scoreless relief. Before the sun could even set, the White Sox shook off the ghosts of playoffs past and sent a capacity crowd home happy.

But there's more work to be done, folks. It takes three wins to play for the pennant. The Sox look to get the second one tomorrow at 6:05 CDT as Mark Buehrle faces Mr. XL himself, David Wells.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Pods steals a base at home for the first time in an eternity, but the Sox offense's 5 dingers were most important!
