Sox Magic Number:
4
"Despite the loss, Sox magic number drops thanks to the D-Rays."

Short Take:Sox leave 12 runners on base in lethargic 3-2 loss.

The White Sox dropped their second game in a row to the Tigers, losing 3-2 tonight at Comerica Park. Brandon McCarthy turned in a quality start, allowing 3 runs in 6.1 innings of work to suffer the loss.

The contest was scoreless into the bottom of the third. McCarthy retired the first 8 Tiger hitters before giving up a solo home run to Omar Infante to put the Tigers on top. The Sox tied the score at 1 off of Tiger starter Nate Robertson, who allowed only one run in 6.1 innings of work despite allowing 5 hits and 5 BB. Pablo Ozuna, playing 3rd tonight in place of Joe Crede, led off the inning with a single. Ozuna then stole second and moved to third on a groundout by catcher Chris Widger. Juan Uribe singled Ozuna home with the Sox first run of the night. Scott Podsednik would then bunt his way on base, moving Uribe to second with one out. The Sox would fail to score again, however, as Tadahito Iguchi would fly out and Aaron Rowand grounded out into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

As has been an annoying Sox habit of late, they would give back the run in the next half inning. Craig Monroe homered off McCarthy to give Detroit a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 5th. The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of three consecutive singles, capped off by an RBI single for Magglio Ordonez. Neal Cotts would relieve McCarthy with runners on the corners and one out in the 7th. Cotts induced a double play to keep the score at 3-1 going into the 8th.

Sox blew a golden opportunity to score in the 8th inning. With one out, Jermaine Dye drew a walk and Carl Everett singled off Tiger reliever Chris Spurling. Joe Borchard pinch hit for Ozuna, and he hit an infield single to load the bases with still just one out. Geoff Blum was then called upon to pinch-hit for Chris Widger. Blum responded with a comebacker to Spurling, setting up a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning and the threat.

After Dustin Hermanson pitched a scoreless 8th, the Sox tried to rally in the 9th off of Tigers closer Fernando Rodney. Rodney issued walks to Uribe and Iguchi, and with one out Rowand grounded into a fielder's choice. Rowand beat the throw to first, averting a potential game-ending double-play. Paul Konerko singled home Uribe to make the score 3-2, but he was just prolonging the inevitable when Dye flew out to center to end the game.

The Sox maintain their two-game lead over the Indians in the AL Central as the Indians lost to Tampa Bay tonight. The Sox need to get back on the winning side of the ledger tomorrow as second-half stopper Jose Contreras (14-7, 3.66) faces off against Sean Douglass (5-4, 5.62) at 6:05 pm CDT at Comerica Park.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Defining moment in the bottom of the 8th. Blum pinch-hits into inning ending 1-2-3 DP with bases loaded. Ack.
