WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Whacked By Heavenly Brooms!

September 11th vs Los Angeles

Sox Magic Number:
15
"Is anyone else as sick of being stuck on this number as I am?"

Short Take: El Duque pitches his way out of rotation, offense can't hit their way out of paper bag

When the White Sox first acquired Orlando Hernandez this past offseason, Kenny Williams cited the fact that he's a big-game pitcher with loads of post-season experience as one of his motives for picking up the ageless Cuban wonder. Sox fans salivated over El Duque's stellar late season record, which features a 16-7 lifetime record in September. So when he took the bump at US Cellular Field on a hot and sticky Sunday afternoon, Sox fans had reason to think that he would be the stopper the Sox needed to salvage one game from the Los Angeles Angels. Unfortunately, that thinking was all too wishful, as a terrible outing by Hernandez combined with a nonexistent ofense sent the Sox to their 4th defeat in a row 6-1.

Hernandez started the game of on a sour note by surrendering a home run to Angels leadof man Chone Figgins, a speedy slappy hitter more known for swiping bases than for jacking gopher balls. After getting Orlando Cabrera to ground out, Hernandez hung another one over the plate right in Garrett Anderson's wheelhouse which ended up in the right field seats. The next Angels batter was Vladimir Guerrero, reigning AL MVP and bad-ball hitter extrordinare. Guerrero drilled a pitch to deep left center, but Aaron Rowand made a wide reciever-like grab while clinging to the wall for the second out. Darrin Erstad followed Guerrero with another dinger before the bleeding finally stopped when Hernandez fanned Bengie Molina. Inning over, damage done.

The Angels added another run in the second when Steve Finley scored on a Figgins sacrifice fly, and Ozzie Guillen had seen enough. El Duque's afternoon was over, with the veteran replaced by a guy half his age and twice the pitcher at least today in Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy would work 5 2/3rd innings of solid relief, scattering his hits while only allowing one run and fanning 7.

Meanwhile, the Sox had another dreadful afternoon at the plate and on the basepaths. Willie Harris singled in the first, swiped second and advanced to third on a groundout. Paul Konerko walked, but Jermaine Dye whiffed to end the inning. Until Juan Uribe's home run with 2 out in the 9th, the Sox would not have another baserunner get past second base. Konerko, Dye and AJ Pierzynski were a combined 1 for 11.

The Sox have a much-needed off day tomorrow followed by a three game set in Kansas City. Jose Contreras gets the start Tuesday night against Mike Wood.
