Royal Streak

September 6 v. Kansas City

Sox Magic Number:
16
"Magic number decreases by one as both Sox and Tribe win tonight."

Short Take:Sox hang on, stay perfect in September with 6th consecutive win.

For a game that looked like it was going to be a laugher after the first two innings, Kansas City made things interesting before falling to the Sox by a 6-5 score. Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, whose potential post-season role has been under scrutiny as of late, turned in a solid performance tonight. Hernandez allowed just 3 runs in 6.1 innings of work, notching 6 K's in the process of earning his 9th win of the season.

The Sox ran out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Scott Podsednik singled and advanced to third on a double by Tadahito Iguchi. Podsednik scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Paul Konerko to put the Sox on top. Iguchi then scored on an RBI double by Aaron Rowand, making the score 2-0. The Sox went right back to work in the second inning off of losing pitcher Jose Lima. Juan Uribe led off the frame with a home run, and with one out Pablo Ozuna tripled. After a Podsednik walk, Iguchi sacrificed Ozuna home to put the Sox up 4-0. Podsednik would come home to score on a two-out single by Konerko, and it was 5-0 Sox.

Hernandez was cruising through 5 innings, keeping the Royals off the board and the score remained 5-0 until the 6th inning. In the 6th, Terrence Long led off for the Royals with a triple. He then scored the Royals first run of the night on a balk by Hernandez. Hernandez settled down and retired the next 3 batters in the 6th, to keep the score 5-1. In the bottom half of the 6th, Chris Widger hit a ground-rule double to start the inning, but was later thrown out at home plate when he tried to score on a single by Ozuna.

El Duque came out to start the 7th inning, but was pulled with one out in the inning after surrendering a two-run homer to John Buck which cut the lead to 5-3 Sox. Neal Cotts got the second out of the inning, but he also hit a batter and gave up a single before being replaced by Luis Vizcaino. Vizcaino was able to get Sox killer Mike Sweeney to ground out for the third out of the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Konerko delivered his 35th homer of the season to put the Sox back up by 3 going into the 8th inning. Damaso Marte came on to start the 8th inning, and managed to make things interesting by promptly allowing a leadoff single followed by a two-run jack to cut the Sox lead to the slimmest of margins. Cliff Politte came in to get the last two outs of the 8th inning to set up Dustin Hermanson for the save. Hermanson looked great in pitching a perfect 9th inning for his 33rd save of the season, striking out the last two batters of the game to preserve the W.

The Sox raise their AL best record to (86-51) with the win, maintaining their 9.5 game lead over Cleveland and dropping their magic number to clinch the AL Central to 16. The Sox will look to continue their winning streak and perfect September tomorrow evening when Jose Contreras (10-7, 4.06) starts against Mike Wood (4-5, 3.84). Gametime is 7:05 pm CDT at US Cellular Field, and can also be seen on CSN+.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Widger was victim of overzealous baserunning twice in this one, getting thrown out at home and at second base. Podsednik was caught stealing second to end the 6th inning.
